I have bought a number of EK products, this time around a got a warning notice. Saying in essence "Use EK cooling liquid... or else". Also, even distilled water is not good enough. I had been running my loop on medical-grade distilled water for years.

    Do we agree?

Wasn't this put in after that fiasco with their nickel plating? Either way I use normal distilled water with some UV blue dye and corrosion inhibitor. No problems.

Yes! Don't use distilled water, as it corrodes the nickel plating. Happened to my GTX 480 blocks. Now I just use coolant.

It's pretty terrible if they still can't get the process right. Water should never destroy plating that way. They should either fix the problem or stop making it.

Are you kidding me?! I've got supreme hf and two universal vga ones. Running mayhems distilled and their additive. Does that mean I need to change asap?

Do you use any anti corrosion additives? If so, you are probably ok, if not, then perhaps yes.

By the looks of it no :( silver coil and mayhems biocide are in it. Oh well another thing on the list to do.

Easy answer.. They did have a few dodgy batches about 18 months ago and they fixed it. My blocks were from just before it all went a bit pear shaped. I have always run my system with distilled water and little else apart from some UV dye and I haven't had any problems.
As far as I know the newer stuff is as bomb proof as the older gear is.

So why are they still shipping blocks with warning notices?

It's probably to cover their balls in the event something goes wrong.

    /this

It's because a legal issue to cover eventualities.

Car-manufacturers give these warnings aswell for gas or oil etc.

All quite confusing. What happens if you mix copper and nickel parts, does anti-corrosion work for both?

I ended up bleeding my rid and am letting it dry while I rebuild my rig. Do I really have to buy EK specific coolant?

You don't have to buy ek branded coolant, anything with a corrosion inhibitor should be fine, I'm using mayhems coolant and it seems to be fine.

Do you need corrosion inhibitor and then a biocide?

considering how many people just use tap water and then add some anti corrosion stuff to it im surprised ek even bother to send the page out.

    This.

Just use straight deionised water and jobs a good'un.

    This thrice.

It's only a legal notice which means if you ignore it you can't sue them, but also clearly states that they won't qualify anything but their own fluid, which is not unexpected tbh given the range of liquids out there.

This isn't possible, at least not completely. Hydrogen is just to damn energetic to be held in one place. It bounces from molecule to molecule. Hence at any given moment there are ions in le water, specifically H+ and OH-. I THINK that certain types of heavy water are a tad more stable.

Correct me if I am wrong, I just couldn't stop myself despite risking PO'ing a mod :worried:
