What class are you? If you are a knight or someone who has a heavy armor skill I know where you can get some sweet ass armor pritty much from the start you do have to buy some of the bits like the shoulder armor and boots but you can buy them at the local blacksmith.

So you could wear it and look l33t or sell it and earn a mint I sold mine in the end as I was given new armor buy the gard guild thingy (yes im a cop in the game )

Also did you find the dead wizard at the start? If you borrow all his stuff and sell it in the start town you should get the money to buy the extra bits for the armor.

Actually I havent played it for a bit! must play!!
