    Hey Guys,

Was surfing last night and came across mentions of the a "new" distro that been getting some good press, ElementaryOS

As the wife was insisting on controlling the remote and I had a few hours before QT. I decided to give it a whirl on an old Dell E4300 I have lying around which had Ubuntu installed on it. (I did actually try and install it on a VMPlayer, however the vm refused to boot after installation. Decided to forge on with the laptop, as it was either that or use matchsticks to keep my eyes open

So far I am pretty impressed with it, very light footprint. All hardware was picked up without any troubles, granted its an older machine. Installed my common bits and bobs and was away and loved the desktop (Woot unity killer).

Anyone else had a play with this distro?

I mess around with it in virtual machine from time to time. Installing/uninstalling some programs like spotify can be a bit of a pain, but if you get over that it's a really nice os!

Any idea whether this OS has touchscreen support? I have a T91MT gathering dust because its woefully underpowered for the Windows 7 OS it came with and Windows 8.

Given it's an ubuntu derivative it *should*, though relatively lightweight as it may be, whether the atom is up to it or not is another matter...

It did work perfectly from USB but after installing it it fails to show on the display. Performance wise it was great though, far better than windows.

From looking into it it needs a min resolution of 1024x768 and the T91MT only has 1024x600. :duh:

I really like it as an interface. In my opinion its by far the best linux desktop GUI going. Although I haven't used it extensively so that might end up changing.

Again, being linux [specifically an ubuntu derivative], it's easy enough to replace it for another desktop environment if you decide you hate it... GNOME is still my linux desktop of choice, I like KDE i just don't like the default KDE apps...

I'm not a huge fan of vanilla gnome. It looks alright on the face of it and then all sort of irksome things start coming out of the wood work as you use it. Especially ctrl+delete to delete something. That was down to one dude who thought it was a good idea because the rubbish bin was not accidental deletion prevention enough for him. :wallbash: If anyone deserved a flick in the nuts it's that dude.

Gnome derivatives are a lot better.

I've never actually tried KDE I must give it a whirl sometime.

I prefer Xfce, its fast and reasonably unchanging over time, so when I upgrade I don't have to learn something new. From time to time I try something else like Kde or awesome, but lazyness brings me back.

Ive been messing around with distros a little and so far im loving the Elementary OS GUI, however rumors on the net are implying that dev has really slowed down and even talks that the latest build wont make it out of beta.

I liked crashbang, but found it difficult to tinker with.
I hate Unity with a passion!
I tried Mint with xfce, which was ligth and fast, just not very attractive.
Enlightenment (bohdi), looked amazing, but again complicated.

Just trying this on my laptop at the moment, seems fairly good, performance is decent so far, not a massive fan of the aesthetic but it's certainly usable.
