i think that we should have some sort of emergency help forum in here, to help people if they have an emergency, i mean if their computer isn't starting up at all or if an overclock has gone bad, then they could post there, and if someone sees it, it will be there, so you know if you see a new topic in the forum, someones in trouble..

i think that it would be a very good way to help people, as we do not have anywhere anyone experiencing an immediate problem with their pc can post and get help reasonably quickly, often people dont look at parts of the boards for days :)

Can't they just post in Hardware and Overclocking. I would have said you get help there pretty quickly. And they would still have to wait for someone who could actually help them to be online.

It'd be hard to moderate i recon. Defining 'an emergency' would be tough. One persons definition of an emergency is not necessarily the same as another.

People seem to get pretty quick responses at the the moment if they post in the correct area and ask in the right way.

People who post 'EMERGENCY - HELP NEEDED NOW' don't really do themselves any favours, particularly if it's not really an emergency.

A group of people could start an online help group with a rota of people always on irc or msn who will help out... that's be a real commitment though and also be pretty difficult to manage :sigh:

    There's no emergency...
Non of us get money for coming to this forum and help other users.
We just do it because we like it and beacuse we want.
People will abuse o "emergency" things, and it's going to be hard for admins and/or mods to descriminate what's an emergency and what isn't.
We don't have beepers or something like that, we aren't doctors, we don't come to check the forum if somebody posted an "emergency".
If you have a problem, just post it under, soft, hard, mod or electronics section.

its very easy to define an emergency :)

    * Your computer will not start
    * The problem is very time-critical
    * The problem is extremely bad and is rendering the system basically unusable.

i think that an emergency help forum could just be moderated like any other forum, e.g. project logs! you know, just move stuff out if its not an emergency etc.. it would also provide a valuable resource to be searched :) as it would hold solutions to past problems :D allowing for an even quicker fix

to be fair tho malcs for most emergencies the advice will be pretty much identical.

e.g reset cmos, or swap out each component till u find out which is busted...

still, it might be an idea to have all these basic things in a sticky in hardware....

Its a good idea, but probably couldnt be policed. Directing people to IRC is probably the best option theres almost always someone online or about...

If you have a breakdown you define as an emergency, first (and fastest) thing to do is :search:

If it's not already been covered here, from Google or in Google Groups, post in the correct forum and wait with fingers crossed. :sigh:

It wouldn't work at all, every schmuck would just get stuck in and scream that their pr0n not downloading right was an emergency - it'd be horrible ;)

According to my dictionary, an Emergency is defined as:

A sudden serious happening needing promt action when life is in danger

I'm not sure if a computer going wrong is a danger to your life unless a computer is keeping you alive :worried:

most problems reported in these forums are attended to quite quickly anyway, but there could be an option which we could check if there is a serious problem - better word than emergency really - and some sort of symbol would appear next to the title. And can be turned off when the problem is solved?

just an idea, but 'emergency' sounds a bit too serious

    Me: My internet isn't working!
Haz: Okay, reset your cmos, then try removing parts of your computer until it starts to work.

How is this not an emergency!? :D
I think a sticky would be a better idea.
