It costs around 1500 AUD and then theres shipping, laser tubes etc. Its affordable...ish :p

Video is up, got some awesome footage of the laser hitting the focal point causing flames to spew out whilst cutting.

    Sounds awesome? It is.

how are you cutting those 3D back plates? I thought laser (and waterjet and plasma cutters) could only cut 2D designs

BTW I love it, everything has a clean and crisp edge

I was wondering the same thing. I first thought he did a bend, but the angles are just to crisp. I looked closer and I came to only one logical conclusion.

Sir Djayness of Laserdom, as far as I can tell, created that back plate by comprising a bunch of separate pieces and gluing together. (Am I right???)
And he did a DAMN good job on it I might add!

I think I'll rep him for that piece alone! Yup, just did. :thumb:

I'm glad you got your problems sorted out, BUT... I can no longer hold this in:
Quit working with unmasked material!!! I keep seeing you laying this stuff on the pavement, sticking it in the vice, and always unprotected! Do you have any idea how crazy that drives me?:hehe:

Ah, Im working it like lego :p I cut everything 2d and piece it together 3d.

Thanks! Its held together at the seams and also with small 90 degree parts that add extra strength.

Yeah im going to be laser cutting with the paper backing on so the material stays protected from now on. I initially thought that the laser would melt the protective layer to the material but this doesnt actually happen!

ok ok ok, I got it, I was wondering where you got a 3D laser cutter because I'd buy 2 in a heart beat

now that I look at it I can see the seams

Ah yes :p but can you see glue within those seems?

Actually im pretty over weld on and its glue that seems to get all "stringy" when you fabricate things. Is there a better alternative for acrylic? Heard just normal superglue would do a fantastic job.

Awesome, rep for that. I have the biggest needle phobia ever and im pretty close to ordering a box of 100 so I can glue the seams better. The things we do for modding.....

Oh and I bought one of these so I could work backwards. Real life measurements > autocad > laser cut.

Can you give me a link to where you got your I/O measurements from please :D

Ah yes, this is quite complex but quite simple at the same time.

    1. Go to http://scc.jezmckean.com/home , this is the sketchup collection

    2. Find a motherboard backplate

    3. Do some quick measurements in real life and compare them against the sketchup model, if it all works out then you move on to step 4

    4. Export the file to dwx

    5. Use the layers and top, left, front views to get the pieces you want, redraw the components you want into 2d.

    6. Draw a square of your working area (mine is 190mm*190mm) and put all the pieces in there.

    7. Either print to scale and use that as a template to make your cuts with the jigsaw, dremel etc

    or

Send it to your cnc or laser cutter.

Create mitre joints, 90 degree supports or use grub screws to connect the pieces together.

And yeah, you should get a useable IO plate.

IF....these steps are a pain in the ass and you just want to get to step 7, pm me your email and ill send over the dwx autocad file. I wish there was a collection for dwx models that are to scale for people to use as they would be alot more useful to modders in general.

Sketchup is great for planning, dont get me wrong....but when it comes to the actual construction phase, getting from sketchup to a working 2d drawing is an ass raping pain. If someone wants to host a dwx collection somehow, I would be most willing to lend support in the form of my autocad drawings.

:hehe: Is that sum cut 'n paste from the PM?

You don't want to use superglue, by the way. It clouds the plastic.

Dust started forming on my thread so I decided that I'd put aside those uni assignments for a bit and concentrate on something a little bit more....rewarding.

It's night time so I shyed away from cutting out the main chassis parts as grub screws are a little difficult to see at night (especially the black ones I have). I'll leave the main parts to daytime work.

So I decided to work on the res for a bit and yeah, I was really excited about this thing.

I got my DXF on....clearly (dont ask me what that means....)

And the laser cutter got to work! I sat back and had a nap.

Short nap, I had alot of pieces left to do. This would be my first attempt at trying to create something 3d with what is essentially a 2d printer.

The inlet is obviously up top, the drain and exit is down the bottom and the venom is in black with a green piece of acrylic behind it.

More on that later, I still have the clear front to put on it and I havent cut out the acrylic for that yet. I will be working on this project on Thursday and Friday all day pretty much so I should get going a bit more and youll actually start seeing this thing looking like a computer.

In this case I would try inlaid work (or marquetry in French :D ) But is this laser cuter precise enough ?

When my bsp tap arrived, two came.

Does anyone know what the other 1/4 bsp tap does?
