Hi, I built a comp a few weeks back and only now was I able to get XP home.
You guessed right- it's not working. So.. I popped in the XP home disc, let it format the HDD..copy files.. etc.. etc.. then setup tells me to restart.

So I restart, and an error message appears on the screen: "Error Loading Operating System" I thought, thats weird. So I redo the first part of setup again. Still not working.

I checked on wdc.com and I downloaded the Lifeguard thing and made a floppy disc. Now this is what really ticks me off. I put it in the floppy drive and guess- yea, didnt work. Same error message: "Error Loading OS"

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Comp Specs:
    Duron 1.4 Gigz
    128 MB PC2100 Kingston
    Aspire Case (230 Watts PSU)
WD 40 Gig 5400 RPM 2 MB Cache
    Liteon CDROM
    Comp USA Floppy Drive
    Onboard sound, video, etc.
    Asus A7V8X-MX

Could be the boot sector on your hard drive, have you tried with a different drive? If not, then try it, if it works then, then you know whats wrong.

I tried it with another OS (redhat 9) which worked perfectly so I dont really think it's a faulty drive..

See if you can't get another xp install disk off of somebody and just use your install key, because the only thing I could think of is a bad xp install disk.

Yeah. No one really around with a spare XP disc..

Im thinking of just buying a cheap 5 gig HDD off of Ebay and just having it as the boot drive.

Don't be so hasty, try fdisking the drive into two partitions, see if that helps anything. If not, after you have tried to install xp, boot using the cd again (after it fails) and enter into the recovery console (it'll be a bit like using dos), and type in: /fixmbr

    Sorry, but nothing worked.
But what do you do after you run fixmbr?

It does it's own thing, it'll ask you if you want to go through with it, just accept it and you'll be done. And then you just reboot, and see if it worked. But I'm guessing that it didn't. Sorry! But I can't think of anything offhand other than a bad xp install cd.
