Ok, so I got a new laptop (Fujitsu S2110, great piece of hardware)

and after throwing in a new RAM module, I repartitioned the drive (Just main and swap)

    and threw in slackware 10.2

now ACPI and a few other packages I installed (sound) don't seem to work too well (READ: Not at all)

and there's a horrendously long load screen as it loads all these packages...

being almost completely new to linux (only played around with some cd-based boot discs before)

I'm guessing I need to recompile??

I've got some guides that show how, but will this solve all the above complaints?

oh- and how do I get it to boot directly into X/KDE after startup?

The horrendously long load screen is normal to linux,
Have you tryed searching the net?
Most problems require tweeking the os (very easy compaired to M$. Check all options .
ACPI this is a know fault with some hardware.
Again goto slackwares forum and ask for help.
Im not trying to be rude but a useful tip is Always chek your distro's forum first.

    runlevels

Slackware doesn't play well with new hardware, espically new laptop hardware. I'd try a different distro tbh, maybe Ubuntu.
