If you go on adsl u'll most likely get a modem bundled in with the initial fee or the option to purchase one at the same time, but it'll probably be usb. I'm currently using a Netgear DG834 router to connect and share my adsl line between 3 pc's, very nice bit of kit. Tis about 80 quid and up for a decent router

I take it you already have a router thats why your asking especially for an ethernet modem. If your not using a router and your isp dont provide you with a modem, then get a usb modem they are far cheaper and you wont notice much difference in performance. In case you especially want an ethernet modem tho, Im using a D link 300g+ at home combined with a d link router and have had no major problems so far.

This modem uses the standard ip adress (192.168.0.1), but you cant change it - so you might have to change your router's ip to 192.168.0.2 or such to avoid any conflicts. :thumb:

Either that or as his cable modem was ethernet he's just thinking along the lines of the same for adsl hence asking for an ethernet modem. Either way I wouldn't touch a USB modem with a very long pole. If you already have a switch/router then just go for an ethernet modem, if you don't have one or just a hub i'd go for an adsl router with built in modem like the DG834.

no i dont have a router, jsut a real dislike for using usb to run things like modems

so if my thinking is right if i buy a adsl router then i dont need a modem, shove it inot the wall and power it up then just hook it inot my internal network card

Yep, using the one I have suggested as an example (mainly cos I have it and know how it works), you'll get a cable to go from the router to the adsl socket on the phone line, a small length of network cable, a power cable and the router itself.
Just plug the router into the mains, the adsl socket and your network card. Use your browser to goto http://192.168.0.1 which'll let ya set up the router, it should autodetect most of the adsl settings it needs, if not you should have a list of the ones you need of ur isp. Give it ya username and password and hit connect. Then just sit back and enjoy adsl.
If you have more than one pc just plug them into the 3 other ports on the router and it should give them IP's via DHCP. Only other thing is possibly altering the firewall if you need to.

No you should receive all the details you need from your provider beforehand including your username and password.

The standard DG834 doesn't have wireless built in but the DG834G model does.

if youve only got 1 pc, and only plan to have 1 in the near future, dont bother with a router with inbuilt modem - your paying more for extras you dont need, just get a standard ethernet modem
