Could this be the way to solve the format wars, or does Europe not really have that much international power?
I doubt anything will come of this, I'd imagine its all down to copy protection mechanisms and region control (not originally part of HDDVD spec) as to why the movie studios go for one over the other plus I guess the additional storage will be useful once we go beyond 1080p.
No, I agree - I read the article, and thought "yup, so what?". Given that Microsoft walked away virtually Scott free from the European antitrust case, I don't really think that Europe has the balls or the power to carry through on anything like this - after all, you can't really force a company to do something it doesn't want to. At the very worst, the studios just won't publish any HD discs in Europe. I don't think we'll be going over 1080p for a long time yet, by which time we'll be onto BluRay/HD DVD's successor. I can't see much of a need for anything over 1080p (come back in 10 years and prove me wrong!) - even digital cinema projection to 30' screens is 2048x1080 or 4096x2160.
There are already 1440p display screens coming. 2560x1440 I think is the res plus QuadHD, its only a matter of time before it hits the home theatre large screen setups and you see stuff at the res it was recorded in no doubt why DRM is so important.
good god TVs are catching up with our PCs I bet 1440 res looks sweet other than games, are there any media that use this res without upscaling ?
