well i just got a 256mb evga 6800 gt and a nv silencer 5 cooler. i removed the oiginal heat sink and fan, installed the nv silencer applied the thermal paste on the gpu and the 8 rams. cleaned the old thermal paste of first. seemed to go without a problem. plug fan to card installed in pc plugged a direct power connector to card. when i booted pc up first time started good booted fast and right past vmi pool stuff the screen gets all garbled. alot of colors and stays that way. turned off n on again now it goes str8 to garbled screen. whats the deal with that. i got card from newegg.com
did you test the card before putting the cooler on? the cooler may not be making good contact with either the core or the ram on the card, or you may have damaged the card when installing the cooler
and now im missing one of the original spring screws from to heatsink so im gonna have trouble rma it
Don't know about yours, but mine had some sort of red glue around the screws, so rmaing it will not be an option if yours had this too...
so what do think happened? i applied the thermal grease that came with the silencer. i applied a thin layer to gpu and alot to the rams did a clean job no mess. system booted up and right b4 i could get to window my colors went. now alls i get is garbled colors.
2 things could have happened: you damamged the card when installing the heatisink or the card was duff to begin with either way your chances of an RMA are pretty slim i got my 6800 and the NV68 at the same time but the first thing i did was test the card out to make sure it wasnt DOA, kinda sucks if the card was screwed to begin with
how could u mess the card up on installation. im mean i have installed amd 2600 mobiles with sp97 with as5 and tornado fans with no problems. what do use as for thermal paste. did u use the stuff that came with the cooler or as5?
well inspite what was said newegg.com rmaed the card. i got my $405 back. they dont have more evga 6800 gts now. any brand 6800 gt recommendations? also i saw tutorials on nv5 silencer n i dont understand how i could have messed it up. it looks simple. one question what do use to clean off the old thermal paste from the gpu. do u use the paste that comes with silencer or some as5?
On my 9800 pro i used 91% rubbing alch. The other 9% is water, so all you do is spray it on, clean if off, let it set for a bit then go about your business.
