I am using a trial version of exchange 2003 on a trial of windows server 2003 just to have a play and get a feel for this whole direct push set up.

I have set up the exchange server and that works a treat, i have also set up my phone to access the exchange server. This works fine aswell except it is on a schedule, it is not "push".
I have looked at the mobile services properties under global settings in exchange system manager and there is not a box for direct push. Am i right to assume this is because i am using a trial of exchange 2003? If so that's fair enough you can't expect full functionality from trial software.

Now as i can either manually sync my phone or it does it, itself every 10 minutes as set in the schedule is data only being used when the synchronisation taking place? I.E every 10 minutes? If so how
much on average data is being used?? I ask because i am trying to calculate the best data package to use for my phone.

Also if i was to upgrade to a full version of exchange 2003 and enable direct push it is my understand that a hearbeat is sent between the phone and server to keep them talking. How often and how much data does this use? So what minimum overhead could i expect to incur before any e-mails or anything are sent and recieved??

I hope that makes sense! Thanks

For directpush you need a full version of Exchange 2003 with SP2 installed. Then you will have to enable direct push in the mobile services. Next your mobile device will have to be running Windows Mobile 5(2005 w/e) and have the Messaging and Security Feature Pack installed.

ive done all of that except the full version of exchange which will in turn allow me to active direct push in mobile device properties like you said.

i am looking into purchasing the full version of exchange now so i will be able to do this! thanks for confirming this anyway.

i am still interested to know about the data usage though.

hmmm, i wonder how much the actual sync uses though as mine currently is only on a forced sync.

When I was doing that reading I read that people were getting about a 1-6 mb monthly usage of the direct push and autosync.
