Alright, well I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my rig and I have a problem that I was hoping you guys could help me with.

So the problem is that every so often (as in it will happen 10 times in a row and then not happen for a few days) Windows Explorer just stops working and the process has to be restarted. I'm not doing anything specific with it, I could just be trying to open a folder or right click on something. I've tried reinstalling Windows 7 and the problem came right back.

I was thinking that this could be either a problem with some piece of software that I'm running, or a driver issue of some sort. Here is the software that I have installed in case it's useful.

EDIT: If you're in the thread for the .m2ts then head to post #8.

Well it's clearly a software that does something with explorer that it should not do.
Try to remove BitPim, LCD USB modem, MagicDisk, SUPER and see if it helps.

BTW, they is way better codec pack out there...
Try Shark007 codec pack. It's deigned for Vista/Win7 and is avilible in 64-bit and allows you to enable 64-bit Media Player 12, thumbnail preview and more, and it's very light, and well designed.

I would also try to remove the MagicDisk program, because a lot of programs modify/change Windows Explorer so you can right click and create a Virtual Hard Disk or a Virtual DVD/CD-Rom Drive and they add things onto Windows Explorer and that might be causing the crash? It might not but it's worth trying to narrow it down to find out what is causing the crash.

On a side note I might just grab that Shark007 codec pack, as long as it doesn't harbour some hidden trojan type thing in the codecs lol.

Alright, thanks! I only had those packs installed because I was converting .mkv files to AVCHD to save some space. On that note, does shark (or do you know any codec packs) read a .m2ts file with the correct resolution? Because earlier I had it working (displaying as 1920x1080) and since Ive reinstalled Windows I can only get Media Player to display it at... extremely small sizes.

Can anybody point me towards another virtual disk program that does work with Windows 7?

According to here Power ISO Download Page It lists Power ISO as working with all of the below operating systems including Windows 7 32 and 64 bit versions.

    Supported operating systems:

32-bit Windows: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, Windows 7

64-bit Windows: Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, Windows 7

EDIT: Just spotted it says Windows 2008?? What's Windows 2008? Unless it's Windows Server 2008?

I uninstalled everything that was recommended except for SUPER; and I installed VirtualDriveClone and the Shark007 codec pack (x86 and x64). I'll see how that works for the crashing, but in the meantime does anyone have advice for whats up with the .m2ts playback? I used the video analyzer built into shark and it reads the files as being 1920x1080, but then when I try to play them it still doesn't play at the correct res.

Yes, Windows 2003 and 2008 means Server 2003 and Server 2009.

Apparently it can play them. But I have no idea how well, now if it's only for the 32-bit Media Player or 64-bit or both. I know that m4k works on both perfectly (assuming you have the computational power)

You should NEVER install different codec packs. You have to choose between Shark007 32 + 64-bit or SUPER, as it can create a conflict and miss the uninstaller.. which can lead to a possible curse of a codec problem which can be difficult to remove.

BTW, to enable 64-bit mode Media Player, check out "Settings Application x64" panel under "Shark 007 Codec" in the start menu.

SUPER isn't a codec pack though per se is it? It just converts the files to different formats using codecs already on the computer? And yeah I set up that x64 right away, I mean if I have a x64 processor and OS I might as well use it right? I think I might just mess around with the settings until I get it to display the files correctly; as I know that they are at full res and that WMP CAN play them at it.

Perhaps... it depends on the software. But, if everything works, then it's ok, leave as is.

For me I have no issue, but I don't have videos of all formats avilible to test everything.

Remember that you may need to restart the player to unload the codec, so that it can load the new settings.

Hmm...I've tried changing literally every settings in both the 32 and 64 bit versions and I still can't get it to play correctly. I googled and I seem to be the only person with this problem.

Well then, what I would suggest is reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate which you said is the version of Windows 7 you have installed and just start again :)

That's what I did to get it messed up the first time! I can still manually resize WMP, or just make it fullscreen (which is what I normally do when watching the m2ts files); it's just an annoyance that I have an HD file that shows up smaller than most of my DVD quality movies.

Also, the problem with Explorer crashing seems to be fixed. I don't know which program was causing it but at least it went away. Thanks for the help!

Well that sucks... :/ try their forum for help, I guess. If not fixed now, you can see into it to have it fixed in later versions or have a work around.

Shark007 has a tool called metafox (http://shark007.net/tools.html) free, which allows you to convert m2ts into mkv, if you are interested.

I had a problem with Windows Explorer crashing in W7 RC when doing something as mundane as copying & pasting RAW image files from one drive to another, so I think it could be just generally unstable.

As for m2ts files, I always view them in VLC media player as WMP can't seem to cope. I also use Badaboom or Handbrake to convert them to MP4's.

Should not happen. Else 1 of the 8 million beta testers including myself would kinda noticed.

I tried using VLC for awhile but I just didn't like it for some reasons. Plus VLC couldn't read the timestamp on the files so I had to just guess how much of the movie was left etc.

Hmm....tempting. I wouldn't lose any quality would I/would the files get much bigger? Right now for each movie (4GB) they average about 5000kbps 1920x1080 24fps video with 640kbps 6 Channel AC-3 audio.
