Which distro are you going for? In my experience *buntu [Ubuntu derivatives and Linux Mint] is more compatible, Fedora is more stable...

Technically spotify and steam both work in fedora, but I found spotify was flaky as hell and steam was a bit temperamental too...

Had no such issues with Ubuntu but overall it was more prone to hissy fits than fedora...

Whatever distro you go with either someone or here or places like stack overflow can help you with any issues...

Well that's a topic for another blog post...

So far I have the following

Ubuntu it's kinda obligatory, but I really hate unity
    mint
    pinguy
    crash bang
Can't remember the name of the district but it's the one that comes with enlightenment desktop manager.

With my work with esxi and lamp stack servers I'm not a complete novice with Linux but then again I'm no where near an expert. Mainly Debian and ubuntu, haven't touched fedora centos in years and it's been about 18 years since I installed mandrake!

The testing is also to see if I can hand my parents of which my dad is a technology phobe a linux machine and see if it's really a contended as a desktop os replacement for windows.

Of the ubuntu-based distros, Kubuntu [KDE] or Mint [Cinnamon/MATE] are the most like Windows from a UI point of view, so if that's what he's used to they're probably a good place to start...

You can also go for the Gnome based "Ubuntu gnome". I have converted my tech phobe missus to Linux with the combo Ubuntu + gnome.
