While back I had fantastic idea to install a 12” LCD screen in my BMW, the screen would be installed on the center of the dashboard and function as a DVD, mp3, GPS system. So I opened up my hp xe2 laptop and located the LCD cable that links the screen to the base unit the cable consists of 15 colour coded wires I cut one of the wire and used a 3ft telephone cable wire to extended but the screen became fuzzy in same places so I tried again with a shorter wire about 3inchs and it worked clearly but I it to be longer so I can hide the base unit in the glove box and the screen on the dashboard. Can someone who knows about wires please help me?

Can you extend laptop lcd cables or not ?

im sure a telephone wire isn't shielded that well...

maybe you can run a pair of shielded cat5 cables or something

    LCD's

Laptop LCD cables are a specific length and the timing of the response they return is based on this length, I have read that adding 22ohm resistors to the data lines can allow you to have a longer cable. Can't hurt to try... :dremel:

3 colour signals, 3 grounds for them, H and V sync, and the main shield/drain

    Maybe DCC, but that's rare.

    That's 9 wires :)

Yup - some monitors even have DB-9 connectors on the back of them, and then the included cable goes from DB-9 to VGA.

    extending dell laptop screen

I have an old Dell Inspiron 4000 and I too, want to see if I can extend the length of the cord running to the screen. (so that I can mount the screen on my noticeboard and use it for news and email etc, without having to mount the actual body of the laptop on the wall).

I've openened it up, but instead of seeing a bunch of coloured wires connecting it, it seems to be a plain sheet of copper that is loosely curled around the hinge.

    Heres a picture:

Does anyone know how I would go about extending this type of connection?

Have you tried opening the "body" itself and see how the "copper sheet" is attachted to the internal VGA card? maybe that would be more succesfull? And the same on the LCD side? The sheet has to be connected to it in some way.

Yeah point taken. I opened it fully and its a properly differentiated ribbon cable or whatever you call it (thin orange plasticy ribbon cord thing with many conductors running along it). Don't know how I came to think that that "copper sheet" was what I was looking for - its clearly just intended to facilitate the cord curling around the screen hinge. I think my lazyness made me dismiss any possibility that would result in some work.

Anyway, after pulling it apart I discovered that the bare bones of the laptop was surprisingly insubstantial. So I just mounted the whole thing on my noteboard. It works great, I now don't have to turn on my desktop which is incredibly loud just to check my mail or maybe lookup a definition or some tidbit; plus it is attached to my stereo and plays music of my media server. Also, I can't think of anything more noticeboard worthy than something which displays news, email, contants, things to do....I'm sure I'll think of many more things that will come in handy.

The innardsy kind of look actually doesnt look all that bad. I reckon it adds a bit of character to my room.

If you extended just one of the wires that could be another reason due to the resistance on the cable, try doing all 15 of the wires and then see if the screen is fuzzy, and like said above, telephone wire probably isn't the greatest one to use

Haha, thats pimp mordeth. Nicely done. As for the monitor extension- track down that guy who made the AGP extension cord! He used 22 gauge individual shieded wires and managed it when everyone said it wouldnt work, so u could give that a shot.

yeah i did the same thing too
except mine has like 32 wires
I ripped open 2 printer cables and used its wires
the fuzziness went away after a few weeks
maybe you could use speaker wires
