would it be possible to take the antenna off of my WMP54G wireless-G PCI adapter and mount it on a base, and then connect it back to my card? i want to get my antenna as high as possible, since it's on the back of my computer case, on the floor, in a different room as my router (WRT54G).

You could unscrew it and the mount it to a base of some sorts and buy a Male SMA to Female SMA Cord long enough to connect the antenna to the card.

it won't cause any problems? i can easily make a base in metals, nice lathed aluminum with pretty shape.

might have to borrow a piston in auto... we literally trip over them sometimes

It wont cause any problems if you do what i said, Linksys probaly sells some extended antennas with a cable and a base, if they don't other companies do though.
