Hi there all. Whats the best way to do this. At the moment Im using a WD 320gb mypassport and using a program called Memeo Pro. It backs up any new files or changed files when I plug in the hdd. I brought the software when my boss brought his for work for are D-link-323 daul bay unit. Link: http://www.memeo.com/business/backup_pro.php Wanting to have a unit thats going to hold 2 hdds but maybe 3 or 4 hdds so I can upgrade later on. My budget is $700.00nz for this. but can go more if need be. up to $2000 Also I dont have any esata ports on pc. Any help would be mint.
It depends what drive you are backing up. If you're just backing up a storage drive, that contains no system files and is just music, video, pictures and documents etc, you can just use a sync program that looks for differences and copies them over. If you wish to back up your boot drive, then you really need a proper back up program like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. How big are your internal drives? I'd buy a copy of Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image, and just use that to back up both. You can set both of these program to do an incremental back up, so it only backs up changes since the last time, but in reality, it's not a great deal faster if you're doing this over to a USB external. I just set mine to back up the entire drives each time, and tell it to keep 2 copies. When it does the third, it deletes the oldest. This way I always have 2 copies in case one is corrupt, or I accidentally back up a virus. I can then roll back a few days. There's a lot of good back up advice in this thread.
Thanks pookeyhead. At moment I have round 1.4tb of files on pc and also got them on a backup drive in the pc. Mostly graphic design work and photos. also music and video files and other files. Not making backup of system files. Both them programs sound like they do the same thing Memeo can do.
If you are not backing up system files, and just want a back up of your storage, a sync program may be more efficient, especially if you have a internal backup drive already. You can just sync it to the externals. I use AllwaySync. It's free up to a certain amount of data synced, then you have to buy it. It's cheap to license though, and works well. Can do one way and both ways syncs, it can propagate deletions, or ignore them. You can set filetype exceptions.. all kinds of stuff. It can be scheduled as well. It works well. I use this to mirror my RAID back up server, to my second RAID backup server (yes, I am that paranoid)
