In order to add some light and some cooling to my room, I've taken a £5 PSU, shorted the 24-pinner and hooked up some 12v fans and CCFL's.

I've noticed in my case that they CCFL's get quite hot, so is there any danger in mounting them externally? (I've got the small transformer box mounted out of the way so thats fine.)

Also, CCFL's make better desk lighting than normal lights and LED lamps, and a 120cm detla is nice to have on your desk!

a 120 CM Delta? How does that thing not blow you over backwards?

To answer your question, I would imagine that having CCFLs outside your case is rather like having an incandescent lightbulb around- as long as it's at least decently mounted, it shouldn't be a problem. Just keep them off paper and other flammible or heat-sensitive things (plastics), and you should be fine.
