Yeah, it's a pretty basic question, but it seems I can't make my mind up.

I need to buy a couple of external drives, one for my mum and one for me.
I'm looking at wanting 500gb for my, and something lower (less than 250 probably) for my mum.

I can't decide whether to get something like a mybook or a freeagent, or just grab myself an icybox and my own drive.
And I'm looking at the WD passports for my mum, as she has a laptop.

Does anybody have any recommendations? Things to stay away from?

You may want to check the Seagates. Some of the externals have 3 or 5 year warranties as opposed to just 1 year for some of the others.

for you - vantec nexstar+500gb drive. enclosure+disk is almost always cheaper than a proper external disk, but don't make the mistake of buying a POS $10 enclosure like i did.
for your mum - one of those sexy new WD passports. i've never used one, but they look cool and are bus powered.

I am using seagates as my external hard disk drive which is indeed ok to used and also durable. I have mine for almost 5 years before I replaced it.
