When i plug it in via USB its not found under my computer, the computer reconises a device has been plugged in but doesnt show in my computer??
Has it worked before? Have you tried another USB port? If you have, then i'd get the hard drive out of there, hook it up directly to your motherboard and see if that works.
is the external hd self(external power supply) powered or powered by usb? if its powered by usb, then the chances are there isnt enough power from the usb port
I had an external HD with an external power supply that seemingly failed but after I took it out of the case (which pretty much destroyed the case btw) and just plugged it straight into the motherboard it worked fine so I'm guessing my problem was due to the power supply failing so that may be the problem if yours is externally powered
Its powered by a supply not USB. The harddrive's LED comes on so it must have power in there and the computer reconises the device in hardware just not under my computer. I have pictures and stuff on the H/D and it works ok when i plug it into the laptop?
download USBDeview unplug hd, remove entries for devices that are currently not in use, green devices are devices that are currently connected, no need to remove them. plug hd back in, and hopefully the clearout will sort your problem
Just seen this online - this person sorted a similar(-ish) sounding problem that was caused by the drive being assigned the same Drive Letter as another drive on their computer and so changing the drive letter sorted it - I don't think I can post links so I'll copy the text here on how to change the drive letter To change an existing drive letter on a drive, on a partition, or on a volume, follow these steps: 1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. 2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance. 3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane. 4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths. 5. Click Change. 6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, click the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK. 7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change. The drive letter of the drive, the partition, or the volume that you specified is changed, and the new drive letter appears in the appropriate drive, partition, or volume in the Disk Management tool. Maybe it works on your laptop because it is not being assigned the same drive letter as one of your other drives
Think it could be that. On my computer hardrive there is a partition that is reserved using letter D: i think the external drive is also do. I cant change the partition drive letter because it mite cause some programs to not work correctly.
The drive letter didnt help. Im now thinking it could be to with the laptop is Vista and my new build is 7. If i format it it would probly work that would mean i lose all my data on the drive?
Forget this whole thread!! Its randomly started to work, i farted round with permissions on the laptop plugged it into my pc and its installed right away and i can see all my files!! Thanks for the replys anyway
