Hello, I am look for some advice on buying an external hard drive. I am currently looking through amazon trying to find an external hard drive that is in my price range and with the features that i want however the ones that i do come across that are meeting this criteria always have a few bad reviews which makes me unsure about them, I was wondering if anyone could help with a few products that they have and have had not much trouble with. The criteria that I have are as follows: Price: less than £100 Connection type: USB 3.0 ( A must have) Capacity: 1TB or more Quick read/write speeds for both large and small files, I have found a few that have said that they are quick but the read and write speeds are not what they should be Work on both PC and Mac I was wondering if it would be better just getting a seperate hard drive and enclosure? if so any suggestions on both? Thanks in advance
Take amazon reviews with a pinch of salt, some of the people who write them are idiots and don't know jack about the product. I've seen a 1* review of a camera because the 'usb cable didn't reach from the desk to the back of the computer' Unless the drive is made by a completely unknown brand (chinatek type company) they will be fine.
dont get seagate, they are rubbish. many have common faults. i have this at the minute: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/wester...ternal-hard-drive-2tb-black-09312031-pdt.html seems decent at the minute and i hear western digital are a really good make. dont know if anyone else have had bad experience with them though.
didn't think seagate were that bad, got a couple of drives from seagate in the past couple of years and neither of them have had any issues. Looked at the WD one you linked, looked ok but apparently on copying small files it gets a lot slower, is this noticeable for you? Couple of drives i found which i think look ok: Seagate Backup Plus 2.5 inch (1TB) Hard Drive and Western Digital 1TB My Passport Portable Hard Drive and Hitachi Touro Mobile MX3 1TB External Hard Drive
with the small files, mines quick to transfer it but although the green bar on the transfer shows that its full it takes about 10-15 seconds for the notice to say its complete. other than that, its been solid. the seagate one you suggest looks good, but ive had trouble with seagate in the past. and i did a thread once on this forum asking which was the best and i had quite a few responses saying dont get seagate and look more towards western digital. for an external that doesn't require a power adapter you are going to be looking at around £100 anyway i think. And i think all drives have the capability to fail so its just what you think is best for you. for me though i would choose western digital. you can find quiet a few deals on uk hot deals.
