This afternoon, i got hit by a surge of inspiration. I spontaiously decided to vapor cool my computer! So using our 50 amp AC system, I got to work on this endeavor. Notice the carbon fiber duct work***, the low riding air skirt, and the high speed data cables surrounding the machine.

the general idea is to keep your computer more comfertable then you are:

no joke, my computer idles lower then ambient! Amazing. My hard drives run around 14c.

future upgrades to this fully expandable system include a pressure differentiator to prevent overheating in an event of AC failure (a piece of paper taped to a hole in the side), a flow indicator (a pinwheel) and a DB meter (piece of paper to tally mom's bitching)

*** note: cardboard is made from wood fibers. wood is made from carbon. = carbon fiber

You would probably see a further drop in temperature if you strengthened one of the boxes in the run, put a cushion on top and used it as a footstool :)

Well if the air conditioner is pumping in the cooled air, and that is dried from the coils. As long as that is the only source of air, he should be good. But when the AC turns off... watch out. :D

well, i was going to make a temp acticvated disconnect, but then i got lazy and didnt. its only going to be operational durring summer months, so the AC should stay on. i will notice if my temps return to 40c, in that case its pointless and ill disconnect it.

you all have been begging for an update, so here it is.

I said I would begin work on a pressure meter, and if I didn’t say that, I did anyway. My first attempt was with a drinking straw equalized to atmospheric pressure with a back lit display. It is hooked in with some air tube from my sister’s fish tank.

The design was great, and it worked perfectly when *I* was providing the pressure, but when i hooked it up to the air duct, it hardly moved a millimeter! I guess ill need a smaller straw.

in my dad’s study, he had some “ship” style weather gauges, so I decided to steal them. It turns out that they either don’t work, or work very slowly. I marked what the gauges were reading when I put them in with a sharpie, and a few minutes later I took this pic:

and they hadn’t moved. I tried switching the fan on and off, nothing. I guess ill actually have to get back to work on homemade gauges. These read, from L-R, Humidity (%relative), pressure (inches of something, 28-31”) and temperature (degrees F). Tiz a shame.

For those of you concerned with condensation when the ac goes off, I just finished installing the high tech changeover to vent in atmospheric pressure room temperature air:

it allows instantaneous switching, using more carbon fiber! W00t.

im going to try to get some gauges that do work, or fix these, or something, they look really cool.

Now add some 12v tornado fans inside the carbon fibre ductwork!

hes doesnt need to worry about condensation

its not getting cold enough and cold air holds less water than warm air. Condensation really only works when a cold object is placed in a warm atmosphere unlike what he has. His processor is in a cold environment and its hot.

An example would be a soda. Take a cold soda out of the fridge and place it out side. It sweats. Now take a warm soda and put it in the fridge and check later. No condensation.

As long his whole computer is cool in the inside he wont have to worry. But the outside of the case might get some condensation but i highly doubt it.

Actaully, it's when an object drops below the dew point. Dew points are generally quite low in houses as the humidity is also generally quite low. Possible but unlikely, and as Rekarp noted, not a problem with the way its done :D

I knew, but I couldn't be bothered to explain it... :D Thanks for that, Rekarp. The analogy with the fridge is very elegant. :thumb:

besides, there are two 120vAC fans in there already... :hip:
