Hi, I networked for years in XP machines. I read a dozen web help files how to network w8 with Vista but, could not make it work. Vista sees the w8 disks & directories & can exchange files. The w8 win-explorer list shows under Network the VISTALAPTOP. When I click on it it asks for user name/password but, what name & password?, I tried the email passwords I usually use with no result. Vista has no user names or passwords for signing in to when booting-up, the w8 name & password does not work here & neither has Network passwords. Vista does not use "Workgroup" like w7 &w8. Any help will be appreciated.
Its the username and password you log in with on the computer that has the shares. If you have no password just pop in the username and leave blank. You may also need to specify machine name like this.... Username:WHATEVER-PC\Tim Password: P455w0rd (if you have one) You could enabe the administrator account on the machine holding the share and just use..... Username:WHATEVER-PC\administrator Password:***BLANK**** Just be aware if you use the admin account your shares will be toatally open. If you have sensitive stuff you dont want to risk then setup a specific account on the machine with the data and set permissions for that user on your folders. Then use that user account on the machine that needs access. I hope this makes sense ***EDIT*** Just noticed you on the logon screen it says domain "WIN8". You do need to use VISTALAPTOP\your vista laptop username.
Forgive me but did not follow, even the ....EDIT.... This below shows what happens when I click on the Laptop which I changed from Vistalaptop to "Louise" & clicked to open it's C drive. Same happens if I open "h" or "documents" etc.
Usually I just make same name account with same password on all machines in network. I find that to be easiest since it auto authenticates everywhere. Otherwise I think you have to disable some security setting for sharing on network to not use a password and set that folders permission to everyone.
open credential manager in control panel click windows credentials click add a windows credential type \\louise then the local account name of louise and the password for the local account of louise click ok you should then be able to access the folders on louise
Another way is to turn of password protected sharing in the network and sharing centre advanced sharing settings. Rather insecure, but if you are only using this at home, should be all you need.
Hi Rich, what is "...then the local account name of louise and the password for the local account of louise...."? There is no password set. I looked in the credentials but, it scared me off as when I clicked on one & typed the password I know it did not recognised it. Too complicated for me & could mess up evything I have. Hi Julian, in ther mine only shows "network discovery" & when I turn it off I cannot all disappear under Network in w.explorer. & cannot see where to "turn of password protected sharing " I am using Win8 you know. In the Vista laptop I found these shown below, can you make anything out of them? I used cable connection to the router as the wireless one disappeard.
if you have no password, don't put one in, the local account, is the account of the person who uses Louise computer, so if the user is Louise, and that is the name of the account use that.
I tried no password but it does not work. Managed to turn off the Laptop's passowor for sharing & changed the Network to Public, but still no result. For some reason now I do not get the Win Security shown before but, I get this one below. Does this give any clues as to where I GO WRONG?.
