I picked this review by Baptist Televangelist Rev. Jon up on Pete Hines' facebook status and I have to say that it blows my mind, reading both the review and some of the comments that follow it. Negative points highlighted by the review: "It also promotes Computer Hacking. Through the skill "Computers", the player can hack another person's private computer, even though hacking is a federal crime." "It quotes the Bible out of context. One of the recurring themes revolves around Revelations 21:6..."And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely." However instead of pointing out that this verse revolves around the Lord and that He alone can provide eternal life, this game misconstrues it and takes it to mean that we can make water-purifying systems. It is a mockery of the Bible!" "The only other church is called "St. Monica's Church". We know Catholics aren't really Christians and this game pushes Catholicism onto players instead of Baptists who believe in the 1611 KJV Bible." Positive points from the review: "The setting takes place in and around Washington D.C. after a nuclear war. I might as well open by saying the only good thing that this game offers is that it rightly attributes communism to destruction. In the game's story, China has launched nuclear strikes and destroyed America. While this is much applauded (not the destruction of America, but showing that Communists are evil people), that is where the positive nature of this game ends." Comments: "I feel that I could contribute to this conversation. Now I'm not one to play the video games, but I do own a gun store. Day in and day out, I see all kinds of customers, from fathers bringing their little boys in to buy them their very first hand guns, to hunters looking for armor piercing rounds, to Landover Church Security always browsing for the latest in Christian self-defense. You know what they all have in common? They are all decent white Christian folks. None of them are looking for trouble, they are all trustworthy individuals. There's nothing dangerous about a gun store. Guns don't inspire people to go on murderous rampages. Video games do. If you want to feel scared, take a stroll through your local computer store, and look at all the diabolical, satanic games that are being marketed towards our children! Which makes YOU feel more frightened? The fact that there are millions of trustworthy white gun owners who enjoy hunting and occasionally showing off with guns (which is wrong because it is prideful), or the fact that any kid can walk into Wal-Mart and buy any murder simulator he wants, that will teach him how to kill indiscriminately, use drugs, hire prostitutes and disrespect authority?" The full link to the review is here. Can anyone explain to me how people can actually have views which are so deliberately obtuse and narrow-minded?
We know Catholics aren't really Christians Just about all I needed to read really. Absolutely Amazing. (not the destruction of America, but showing that Communists are evil people) I think in proportion to the "evils" of the game, the outright racism, fear, bigotry and fanaticism should be questioned more than just narrow mindedness.
Thanks for the link, Joe. It really is hilarious. The most entertaining thing about living in America is being surrounded by unconscious satire. (For another conscious version, see Church of the Sub-Genius.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landover_Baptist_Church Sorry Joe - Epic Fail! It's a fantastic site... and regularly sucks people in - you are in good company. It's a brilliant piece of satire. Not only well-observed, but seems to suck in both the real God Squad as well as contrasting liberal atheists....
What seem to lend the site authenticity are the malaprops and other apparently illiterate touches. Fallout 3 is satanic because it invites the player to "obliverate people." Another thread, initiated by a poster who calls himself Giant Negro, begins: "Cripples are a deformaty, a mutant amongst men. Cripples are as human as dogs, and dogs do not vote, so Cripples shouldn't either."
BTW: Here are a few non-satirical examples: Satan Is Real and After Your Kids (Mass Effect) Christian Game Developers Association ("The video game industry is a dark, violent, satanic, sexually explicit place that is full of dangerous traps") Left Behind: Eternal Forces (a game in which various Jews and agnostics meet their wholesome non-Satanic deaths)
Ah religion, the bastion of the weak minded fool. Not saying all religious people are weak minded fools mind you, just that religion does tend to attract a large number of them.
Through the skill "Computers" "Science" Catholicism? Church of Atom in Megaton? The Family? There are plenty to choose from lol... Quoting the bible? Dad mentions it like once while you talk about Project Purity. "this game misconstrues it and takes it to mean that we can make water-purifying systems" This person seems to think we can't. OH MY GOD activated carbon is work of the devil! Burn your Britta filters, people! Have they even played the game before reviewing it? P.s. did anyone else think Fallout is one of the few games to not promote killing? Sure you can solve a lot of problems by popping someone in the head/pickpocketing but you can also talk your way through a lot of situations...
Anyone else find that one of the funniest things they've read in ages? "I was try'n a git me a deer, but damned thing was wearing a kevlar vest, so I needs me some armour piercing rounds." For the record, I'm totally pro hunting, but that's just ridiculous.
I like some of the member titles and subtitles... 'Gods Mouthpiece' 'Arms Dealer for Christ' 'Putting the Stud back into Bible study' 'One of the Truest Christians™ Ever'
in that case if you haven't played it don't comment on it until you do . Yeah, Because every deer I've ever seen has been wearing body armour so you would need armour pieceing rounds. Since when has a legimate church needed its own armed security force ? Yeah, they all odd enough to want to buy armour pieceing rounds So much for love thee neighbour also what has the colour of their skin got to do with anything I'm dammed sure that when the aliens turn up that even if their skin is purple and green with orange and yellow polka dots that that some of them will be decent and some will be alien outer space burberry wearing chavs. by the his sentence here he is implying that to be decent you need to be white. The guys an idiot. They're buying firearms from a guy selling armor piercing rounds as a hunting aid I would claim that makes them slightly dodgey or of a below average mental capavity. Apart from the idiot selling guns to kids. Trust me guns probably help people to decide to on murderous ramapages after all when was the last tiome you ever eard of some one killing some one by dropping mult-coloured blocks on their head whislt trying to get the colours in a row or even when was the last time you saw someone dressed as a bright yellow circle running down the road trying to kill people directly before running away from some one else dressed as a ghost actually I'll take a stroll through your shop and then worry about a country that enables such a fruitcake to be allowed to keep an entire shop full of firearms. The first one thats easy its years and years of inbreeding either that or he has been sniffing the gun oil again. DAMM I know I should have read the entire thread before posting. it's fake damm damm and squirry damm
The path to enlightenment is long, my son. Even longer if you miss the important bits of the thread. Now in retrospect, you'll agree the site is a work of art?
