Isn't the idea of a 2048-bit encryption key that it takes more time than exists in the universe to crack even when using all of the world's computing power?

hehe. I believe anything above 128 would take more than long enough to crack. Remember, 129 takes twice as long as 128 etc. ...2048 isn't going to be cracked by a brute force type attack (going through each possible combination).

I doubt someone will crack it.

Maybe someone won't crack it... but how much do the engineers make? I hope it's well over $100,000...

As far as the public is concerned, there are three options.
1)use cold-war era soviet technology to spy on microsoft in hopes of finding the key
2)use an ordered brute force attack which would take billions of years
3)play battleship with another kind of brute force attack that would try random keys instead of each key in order.

Odds are, the key isn't going to be in the first 4096 options, nor the last 4096 options... ect ect. A little logic could save a lot of time...

But overall, for an individual in the public, the odds are deffinately against you. Who knows, amazing things have happened before...

Ah but if M$ knows the odds aren't being in the first or last 4096 keys, wouldn't it be tricky of them to put the proper key exactly IN those series of keys? :)

I'd just try to find the engineer who knows the key and off to split the money 30/70 with him/her. I only need $30,000 anyways :)

    Pft, I'd hit 5/95 :p

And call me crazy, but if I were microsoft I wouldn't make the key all 0's or all 1's. Nor would I make it 1010101010... or 01010101... Logic says that if someone just wanted to mess around, they'd try one of those first. So there's no sense in holding your secrets there.

    Precisely!
