Remember eleven years ago? Yeah, something was purported to happen then, too. Either learn from history, or be doomed to repeat it.

The Russian Golf class sub that sank off Hawaii (and was partially recovered by the CIA using the Glomar Explorer) was in the process of launching it's missiles to start a nuclear war when one of them detonated, sinking the sub. Another one is that the Russians sank the USS Scorpion. One that's not a theory is that a number of High ranking US military officers tried to start WW3 by provoking the Soviets during the Cuban missile crisis. There was a feeling by some in the military that the US was better off starting the inevitable nuclear war while we still had the advantage in megatonnage. While they couldn't order a launch by themselves, they tried to provoke the Soviets into launching by intentionally conducting un-announced ICBM tests during the crisis.
I recently did a module on apocalypticism and millenial prophecies. Short version: if a doomsday prophecy were to come true now, it would be breaking a sequence of about 1,000 failed attempts to fix doomsday dates. And none of the existing prophecies - 2012 included - are based on anything more substantial than what those 1,000 failures were based on. In fact, the 2012 prophecy is based on a lot less than some of the failed ones. Some were based on very advanced scholarly study, research and mathematics, and still failed. (2012 is based on a large stone calendar that was created by people who threw sticks at their shadows.)
