Public Enemy have never been bettered.
Public Enemy was supposed to be doing a free concert this week in Denver while the Democratic Convention is going on. Last thing I heard though was they weren't.
Old schoolers, mostly:
old Outkast material
old Eminem (just 'The Way I Am', actually)
I'm not one for straight gangster rap or pop-hop.
Good to see people around here have great taste. Because jesus, 99.8% of the mainstream stuff is just complete and utter crap.
truth. it's so bad.
glad to see so many people mentioning public enemy -- good times.
To find good hip hop these days you really have to make an effort to seek it out. But it sure is there, just not at your local mega pop record emporium.
The OP mentioned CunninLynguists - these guys are consistently awesome and so rarely discussed. A lot of good artists have already been mentioned, but I'd add the Flobots, Atmosphere - and for those of you who like Aesop Rock, check out Busdriver.
How the hell did I forget Swollen Members! I have their Heavy album in the attic, must go find.
My mate just recently got me into a band called Flobots, they class themselves as Classical/Progressive/HipHop
They have instrumentalists (not just computers) great emcees and lyrics that someone with intellect can listen to.
really? awesome. Got any samples for us?
they have a Myspace and also www.flobots.com the video "Rise" on there is a great tune.
I've always been partial to Snoop, DMX has a few moments (And I mean a few), I'm not 100% sure what they qualify as, but I really enjoy Busta Flex (French group). Butterfingers are also fun (Australian hip-hop, according to Wiki) Specifically the track FIGJAM.
Eminem, the older stuff, isn't bad. Initially I hated it, but it's not so bad if I actually pay attention to it, rather than just using it as 'acoustic wallpaper'.
I like Ice Cube, but that's primarily because of his hillarious acting (John Carpenters Ghosts Of Mars introduced me to his 'acting'), though some of his stuff isn't bad.
Hip-hop/Rap isn't my usual area, as I'm sure you can tell
Notice that the Flobots are from Denver?
