Hi, I'm going to be getting an i5 rig very soon. However, with the i5 750 and 760 only been £6 appart, I'm unsure which CPU to go for. With the 760 been lynnfield based, will be overclock better or worse than 750? Cheers, James --edit-- oops - I read somewhere the 750 was clarkdale based (wrong) even so -760 better or worse? Cheers --FEEDBACK-- Thought I would feedback to this post - I bit the bullet and grabbed the 760. I haven't been able to fully stress-test, as I'm currently concentrating on getting the most out of my RAM, but it seems quite stable after a rather modest effort of overclocking: With the following settings in my MSI P55-GD65 VDroop - High CPU Voltage - 1.351 CPU VTT - 1.298 CPU PLL - 1.860 PCH 1.05(V) - 1.059V Baseclock 200mhz Multi - x21 4200mhz i5 As I say, I've yet to fully stress test, so it could fail - however I have no doubt that with a little extra voltage, it'll either be 100% stable or overclock further (4.5 anyone?) I'm still getting used to the i5 limits and the way the motherboards work (as I've been SKT775 for the last 5 years or so ) Anyways, thanks for everyones input. As for the last poster (regarding ebay) - personally I'm not a massive fan of buying computer kit second-hand, I know that I look after my kit, however you can never be sure whats happened to someone elses. However, many individuals do get a great bargain by taking a risk, however at the moment, I prefer the assurance I get from buying from Scan.co.uk (I know some people have bad experiences, but they've only ever been good with me). Cheers, James P.S. I'll try and update this thread again once I know everything is stable
It's more that I don't want to buy the 760 to find out it won't get as high as the 750 - I know logic says it should go higher, but we all know what CPUs are like Think I'm going to give it a go then - unless the 750 is in scans today-only today, I'll be ordering the 760 (I've seen some have got it to 4.2 on air). Cheers, James
Really? You'd actually pay £20 just to have the extra multiplier? Because that's the only difference between them... With a half decent board both of them should be able to hit 4GHz without too much trouble, which is about the best you can hope for from a mid-range CPU. As it is, it's only a few quid difference so you might as well go for the 760. If it was any more I'd just say go for the 750, as the 860 and 930 would start to look more attractive.
I can't speak about the 760 but for the price difference you might as well go for it. I can say that my 750 will go past 4 gig, with a gigabyte motherboard, without a problem but I need a better cooler to be sure how far I can safely push it.
You looking on Scan? The 760 was on for £140 last week, £6 less than the 750. Back to normal now which is a shame, but yes. Definitely the 760 for the price difference.
So, would you sell your old 920 D0 off and bump up to a 930 if it only set up back another £40 or so?
Wow. I guess I really struggle to see the value in that. I suppose if you were a hardcore overclocker with a decent watercooling setup/LN2 pot you might be able to eke a few more MHz out of it, but then you wouldn't even be choosing from a 750 and a 760 anyway, you'd be buying something much more high-end. But in the real world, for your average user, the difference would be a big fat 0.
In terms of overclocking, even on air the difference of one multiplier (especially to an odd multiplier) seems to have made quite a bit of difference in the top end. So for £20 it's worth doing for longevity IMO.
Hmmmm the 750 is on for £140 today only, however I imagine the 760 will follow suit again - Scan seem to have a habit of continually putting the same components in "today only" week after week. I need the CPU most likely for Monday at the latest - so I'll wait until Thurs/Friday and see what comes up.
https://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecial...+LGA1156)+Processor+-+Retail+?productId=40924 Tempting, but with delivery its £156 - which is more expensive than Scan (as I/we get free delivery with them) Thanks for everyones input!
Probably! My 920 only runs at 4GHz thanks to my mobo forcing a 21x multiplier the whole time - on a lesser board I'd be stuck with 3.8GHz. For me it'd make a difference as the extra RAM I have limits the BCLK - hence an additional multiplier would add a nice ~200MHz. But anyhoo, it'd be madness to buy the 750 now that the 760 is out - unless the 750 suddenly plummets in price...
Got an i5 750 for £80 on ebay last month. Why pay full price for something that'll be outdated in a year(or maybe less). Just got to be carefull who you buy off.
