    Which one?

Thermalright Ultra eXtreme 120 is a nice piece of kit, but the results of the Titan Fenrir are similar, and it's only £33.

    It seems a no brainer...

    Am I missing something?

I've been looking into this myself, when the Fenrir is pwm controlled it performs well, but is still a few degrees higher than the Ultra 120. The Titan fans runs at a max of 2200 rpm, whereas the Ultra 120 fan runs at a max of 1600rpm, hence why the Fenrir does so well at its high speed fan setting.

So if you were to put a similarly high rpm fan on the Ultra, it should perform much higher than the Titan. If you want the absolute best cooling, the Ultra still wins, but for £20 quid less the Fenrir is a good choice, if noisier at high speed. And the Ultra 120 gives you the option of selecting your own choice of fan, the 1600 rpm one I mentioned is the Thermalright part.

    A review of the Fenrir

I have the tr120extreme.. yeah turbo is right.. you stick a decent fan on it and it does it's job.. I'm no fanboy but I do own it- it's a nice heatsink..

33 sounds good.. but I always look at it like this- how can you really match the freezer 7 in price/performance- it goes for 20 around here

Pff Freezer 7? They are in different leagues. Even the Akasa 965 is better than the Freezer 7 and that can be had for just over £11.

really? well not that cheap here- in the us sometimes you can get the freezer open box on newegg for 10 bucks.. but not too often

the freezer wasn't too shabby when I owned it, I lapped it though- haven't tried the akasa.. looks like runs about 25 here.. I'll remember that though- how much better than the freezer?

    * oh nm you meant the fenrir.. well yeah of course! =]

    Bindi....

What would you do? You can work out what this new rig cost me, so I'm not going to balk at spending an extra £20 or so, but the review of the swiftek water cooling system you recently did compares it to air set-ups, and in that review the Fenrir beats the 120.

IS that purely down to fan speed? Would fitting a 2k rpm fan to the 120 make that much difference?

I just want the best cooler, regardless. I'm not ready for water cooling yet, as there will be too much downtime, and this is the only PC I have at the moment. Water will come later... although knowing me, by that time there'll be something else to upgrade to as well :)

I've no idea tbh, I shall have to ask CustomPC or steal the Fenris to use for myself if I know where they put it.

I'd love to see the 120 with a 2K fan up against the Fenrir. Instinct tells me that should be the way forward.... but.... the noise.. LOL. Jet-tastic!

If money is not an issue then the Ultra 120 has an advantage, you can run it with 2 fans in a push / pull configuration. Bjorn3d tested the Ultra in this dual fan config, and it ran 2 degrees cooler than the Fenrir, overclocked and at load.

In an another test, adding a higher 2000 rpm to the Ultra improved its performance by 2.6%, thus you could use 2 high rpm parts, to additionally boost performance.

I don't know if it's available on your side of the pond but I would be considering the Prolimatech Megahalems.

As for your 2 choices I would go for the Thermalright, but they work best after lapping the base flat.
