Original story The problem I see here is that looking at birthrates as a long term determinator of population is looking at only part of the issue. Sure the US is reproducing at a replacement rate, but that doesn't mean that the population is not growing. It is the combination of birthrate and immigration, or better yet birthrate on a global scale, that are the really important numbers. People tend to get very scared when you start talking about zero or negative population growth, but unless we can achieve this then we really aren't making progress towards sustainability as a species.
Rather out of place comment, Rebourne? Given all the stuff we've been hearing about obesity, how Americans are all becoming overweight fat-asses and obesity was correlated to infertility, you'd expect them to be lower if the "obesity epidemic" was even remotely truthful. Oops. I guess my comment is just as out of place as Rebourne's
