    Hey there.

I've been meaning to try out a mac for a while so I am considering in buying a Mac mini so it can sit on top of my shiny new Shuttle SN95G5.

When I get bored with the mac, can I turn it into a RedHat server or something?

    Thanks

Not exactly RedHat, but something that will run under the PowerPC architecture like Yellow Dog (probably the most popular choice) or Debian. I'm not sure RedHat support PowerPC. I'm not really 'into' Linux enough to know ;)

    Some more info: http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/11/30/linux.html

Are they any good? There are a few owners on here that will probably nod enthusiastically at you with a grin :D

To answer your last question, you can't really 'think of getting Tiger installed' if you're picking up a new one as it will come with Tiger already installed.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I've never really properly used a mac before so I dont know what performance is like so is it really a good idea to get the faster one and upgrade the ram?

    Thanks

Yes, yes, and yes. Get the faster Mac Mini, then upgrade to 512MB, or preferably a gig of RAM. There's only one DIMM, so if you want a gig, you have to buy a single 1GB stick, which gets really pricey really fast. But, if nothing else, do upgrade to 512MB, as 256MB doesn't get you very far.

And yes, there is a decent selection of linux distro's that run on PowerPC architechture. I've been looking at a Mac Mini for awhile myself, so I've thought about all these options as well ;)

Im really dissapointed with apple latly as a company. over priced and over exagerated OS and software that becomes common technology within a years time. if you want to lean or are curious about a mac osx use cherryos. 1 its free and saves you $499.00

It's also been withdrawn by the distributor, and it's 'developer' has left the company under a cloud - all due to it being a complete and utter rip of PearPc. Both of the emulators are Slooooow. Ask around the forum - I believe a vicitim support group has been set up. ;)

For the person who already has a PC and wants to dabble (the PC equivilant of bi-curious...), a Mac Mini with Tiger is the best way to go. That or try and pick up a second hand iMac somewhere and pony up for the upgrade.

I think I'll just go for the mac mini instead of a second hand iMac. Reason being is the size.

Thanks everyone your help is much appreciated ;-)

Something to keep in mind - just about any high quality DDR will work just fine in that mac mini, so buy it with 256 and go buy a corsair 1gb dimm and put it in yourself (without breaking off any of the little plastic tabs.....)

It will save you a bunch of money.
