I'm looking to do some glowing thingies with flashing LEDs and fiber optic lines in my case(stylish!) and I was wondering how I could do it. http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/Unjacketed.htm If I use the 1mm fiber wire and put it near an LED, it will pick up the light and glow with it's colour, right? Just wondering
I'm putting it near the plastic part of an LED by the way(the fibre optic won't be drilled into it, I don't feel like doing that fine-work)
You want it to glow along the length of the fiber wire right? Not just at the end? If so, I believe you need to sand it along the length of the fiber...this will let the light come from the sides. Eventually you will lose all of the light out of the sides, so you will need to use multiple leds if using a very long length of fiber. Look at Zapwizards LAN PC in the projects forum, specifically the nuclear symbol shining through the fan.
He could use some side glow fiber optic cable Shadowspawn http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/Sideglow.htm Looks like a cool effect.
ashyg, the entire fiber will not glow, only the end points. But you can, like shadowspawn said, sand the fibers (or make them diffuse in other ways). That way the light will be broken along the whole fiber and not just in the ends.
