Hi there. I've just built a new PC, with Win7 Home Premium 64bit. I've put Norton and a wireless USB dongle - Getnet GN-531U. Otherwise still pretty clean install.

When I boot up I get a message:

"There is a file or folder on your computer called 'C:\program' which could cause certain apps to not function
correctly. Renaming it to 'C:\program1' would solve this problem. Would you
    like to rename it now?"

If I rename it and reboot again, I get the same message, but it suggests renaming to program2/program3 etc etc each time. I've done a few searches and I can't find a specific casue. I assume it is down to the Getnet dongle as I'm pretty sure I didn't get any issues after the Norton install. The file itself appears with a last modified date back in 2009 as wel which is weird.

I've done a full virus scan and it shows system is clean, and bearing in mind I've not done much with the PC yet, I would be suprised if it was virus related anyway.

Has anyone else come across this, and have you been able to identify the cause.

    Cheers,
    Richard

Open a command prompt in Windows and type:

    dir c:\progra*.*
    and
    dir c:\progra*.* /a:H

If you see anything other than "Program Files" in those, then something is probably messed up by some bad coding on an installation program from a third party company.

If you want to try fixing it, type this into the command prompt:

    REN C:\Program c:\Program1

Obviously replace the first "Program" with whatever the name of it is now (if the number has changed).

Remember, this could be a file aswell as a folder. The file may simply have no extension.

Hi - the file is definitely there, I have no problem finding it or renaming it (I saw other forums where people mentioned they couldn't see it - I can see it).

The problem is I want the file to stop reappearing each time when I boot up.

Is it remaking the file each time? Even if you rename it completely away from program to something like "deletemelater1"?

You might want to have a look in msconfig to see if the file is in the boot/startup/services tab.

Yup - it remakes it every time

Yes - it creates a new file every reboot, assuming I have renamed the previously created one. I'll check MsConfig tonight to see if there is anything in there that looks like it could be related.

I've also emailed the suport email for Getnet in the UK - I'm 99.9% sure it started after I installed that USB wifi dongle.
    Cheers.

It was the USB wireless dongle software

Just in case anyone else comes across this same issue.... As I suspected, it was the Getnet wireless dongle - there was a spurious looking entry in the msconfig startup tab. I disabled it, rebooted and then re-enabled it and now I don't get that message anymore. I'm not quite sure why that would fix it but it has... The program was called RAUI.exe.

It has now lead to another problem which I'll see if anyone can help with...:sigh:

    Cheers,
    Richard
