I've just built myself what I consider to be a good rig (see sig) and pre-ordered FFXIV.

Imagine my joy the day it arrived and I installed, switched all the options on to full and discovered I may as well have not bothered!

Anyone else having frame rate issues way bigger than they should have for their spec?

Do you think it's down to poor game coding or immature graphics drivers?

    Thoughts/comments welcome!!

    Bing.

Admittedly, I ran it with all the options on full and in the city, it was tonk!!

I'll have to play around with it. The native res of my screen is similar to yours 1920x12..

..but I just refuse to admit that I've spent all this dosh on a monster rig and can't spank this game into next week! Such is life..

I've had a decent time running it, though I'd say it's a fair bet that my CPU is limiting some things.

My buddy and I were both trying out the game together on Skype and discussing issues as we had them, he discovered abient occlusion and depth of field made massive hits to his FPS. Visually, they don't change too much so you might consider turning them off if you haven't already.

However, I'd say it's down to this being a game which is developed in the spirit of being a PC and console game, much like XI. It plays like a PC game and is visually stunning/demanding like a PC game, but they probably lost some development time due to the console features and thus haven't fully optimised the game yet. Did you play the closed beta? At first the camera controls were still console style like XI, and hardware cursor wasn't even added until final release. There have also been massive updates to the menus to reduce the brutal lag they had in beta. Square seems to have put all their effort into making the world/story/content first and optimisations second. I expect the first round of patches to be PC optimisation changes almost exclusively.

got 5870 cf with 980x cpu and it runs fine

i think its the gpu you have the 5970 is not configured for the game yet theres plenty of forum posts on the official site asking when support was likely to come. EA say its a AMD problem and AMD say its an EA problem so it could be a while. World of Warcraft had similar issues upon release of wrath of the lich king that took 3months to sort.

try disabling one of the gpus and you should be fine with the game, They released the game to still look good in 5years and most systems will struggle with it on max settings

I was wondering if it was something to do with my card, hence me hinting at drivers not being up to scratch yet. I'll disable one of the GPUs as you suggested. I didn't really think of that because I play Aion, which is still graphically stunning but the card pumps out 250fps.

Don't forget that it might be the game itself at fault - some engines just aren't very efficient with some setups imo. The original Halo is a classic example on PC - some computers spanked it no trouble, others (even high-end ones) were brought to their knees by it.

the game is very CPU intensive.

my friend and i played it over the weekend.

    he has an AMD X2 6000+ with 4GB of DDR800 with a 1GB 5770

    i have a i7 920@4Ghz with 6GB of DDR1600 and a 1GB 4870 (almost the same as a 5770 10% faster maybe)

i run the game @ 1920x1080 with No AA High Textures and with resolution buffer (6/6).

he runs the game @ 1440x900 with No AA, low textures and Double buffer (2 notches down from resolution buffer 4/6). he also turns off the effects in-game.

granted some effects and grpahcis settings dont do much to FPS but he still jerks while i have a perfectly acceptable 30FPS+ minimum.

after some testing upping the graphics textures and effects did very little to minimum FPS it was mainly the buffer size which im guessing is rather CPU/RAM reliant altohugh with out further testing hard to tell conclusively.

Although the game is made to run on the PS3 i can tell you it wont be anywhere nearly as pretty as the PC version and the draw distance will be less than half if not more.

@bing - catalyst 10.9 has addressed some serious issue with CF and 5970 when playing with FFXIV and i still dont think they are fixed.

Performance frustrations mainly! There's sweet FA support for my card at the moment. I might as well run it on my old GTX260 216TOP...

That and I'm used to playing 'proper' MMOs like Aion, WAR and WoW etc and just can't get into the minimalistic interface and pressing return etc for the text advance. Scroll wheels have been around for years now Square-Enix!! Effing use them!

Just gutted I paid the extra for the collectors edition, although I got a free mug out of it... every cloud and all that..

Yeah, some stainless steel thermal coffee cup with a leather ffxiv band around it

a silk map of 3or23j6 (if you've seen it, you'll get that joke)

the very same forever to be blank book to not record your adventures and a one-time password fob.
