After finally purchasing a suitable case on the market place I could finally get all my test bench hardware off the chest of drawers in the bedroom.

Two days later my old faithful Hyper type r 580w psu takes a dive. The psu will fire up with a jump plug but not when connected up in the case. I have a really basic psu which fires up the whole pc so it definitely looks like the psu is done.

Question is now, seeing as this pc is just for testing things do I buy a decent branded psu or just get a cheapy (never do this normally).

Specs of the pc are, Asus m2n 32sli, X2 6000+, 4gb 800mhz ddr2, 2 hdd's, 8800GT and 4 fans. Not exactly a power muncher but I would like the ability to be able to test a more modern gpu if needs be.

So would a cheapy do the job?

I had a problem like this the other day, turned out to be an old HDD stopping everything from getting power. Have you tried booting it with the bare minimum?

A cheapy won't fire many modern GPUs no. Some of them need 40 amps on the 12v rail.

Hmm one of the hdd's is a really old ide drive (the other isn't presently connected) so I'll try disconnecting it.

Yeh I was thinking that might be the case, I think the minimum I need to be looking at is something like a corsair CX430.

    Couple of budget psu options.

    600w CM

    430w Corsair

Already own a 430w corsair and it resides in my wife's pc and seems fine.

Leaning towards the 600w cm just for the extra W headroom, it's only for a test bench after all.

    Any opinions?
