For those of you who know, or those of you who've tried, wireless on linux is a newbie's rite of passage.

Well after approx. 9 hours of trying I finally got my Netgear WG111T USB 2.0 Wireless Network Adapter to work with WPA on my Ubuntu Edgy install.

It was frustrating to say the least, but like most things linux the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. I can now safely say I've climbed the linux wireless learning curve: iwlist, iwconfig, ifconfig and ndiswrapper. All at the command line; no GUIs

This newfound confidence in my linux skills has spurred me on. Next task: get my (Arch Linux) laptop talking to my (Ubuntu) desktop.

Has anyone had any experience with/know anything about Avahi?

Feels good when you finaly crack it doesn't it :D

If you haven't already, perhaps you'd like to help others with the same wifi card by contributing to Ubuntu's Wiki (or any other wiki)

    Can't help with Avahi, sry.

You can configure a linux network (NFS) ou a windows network (smb). Just apt-get samba on ubuntu and use a client like the default one un ubuntu ou KDE konqueror (smb:/) and if you have shared folder, you will be able to see then on both computer if they are on the same network
