I was pretty sure it was a socket on the minis...

Are there any good free games anyone wants to recommend? Im not an avid 3d gamer so classic type games would be cool.

Ive got a genesis emu already.

congrats. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
(Textedit is the name of the simple text editor that comes with the mac - you don't really need to download xpad.)

welcome to the land of stable secure operating systems.

I like xPad more, but not as much as Adium! Wish I could have it on my windows box at work.

I think there is already a Mac software thread in this forum, but I thought I would add a few favs of mine.

    • Butler - You want to talk about system I/O customization, this is the big daddy. There is no way I could describe everything it does, just check it out.
    • Media Rage - This program is the best way to organize your MP3/AAC files outside of iTunes. You can rename and move files based on their ID3 tag info. Between this and iTunes I probably have the most anal-retentive music library on the planet. Only downside is that it costs money
    • Microsoft Entourage - I know this wil be controversial when I say it, but this is the single best e-mail program I have ever used*. All of its PIM functions are also well done and totally integrated. Compared to my experiences in Outlook this thing look like it was designed by a different company. If you want no part of the entire Office suite for Mac I would still urge you to at least take this for a test drive if you need a great PIM.
    • Applescripts - This is a great little "hidden" feature of the Mac OS. Their scripting language has hooks into a good deal of the OS and many of the applications. If there is something you want your computer to do that it doesn't, chances are excellent that Applescript can help.
    * I have used ALOT of email programs. On the PC side of things I am currently using Thunderbird and about 80% happy with it. I have used all flavors of Outlook Express, Outlook 98, 2000 and 2003. On the Mac my email client history goes back into the dark ages of Claris, Eudora, Qualcomm, Netscape Communicator, etc (I am sure I am forgetting some). Entourage 2004 is the most complete of all of these programs in every way and aside from a few personal choices, I don't see my self leaving it anytime soon.

Entourage is horrible IMO. Mail works fine for me.

VLC, Adium, Firefox, iStumbler, Automator, iRecord, AppDelete & UnRarX

All freeware except Automator which comes with OSX.

I would love to know why you think its horrible. I haven't found a program with Entourages level of organization, customization and junk mail filters yet. In full disclosure I haven't used the current version of Apple Mail, but I can't fathom its ability exceeds Entourage in filtering and in scheduling of events.

I have one email address that is spam filtered at the server, and i view through IMAP. All I want is something to view my mail, I dont need all the other stuff that comes with entourage. Mail runs quick and is free :p

Granted, but that doesn't make horrible, just feature heavy for your use. I will concede that if you email needs are basic/light that Entourage would be a waste.

Nothing IMHO. In fact, if you jump between OS's alot it is a great option as it can be set up nearly identically and therefore the end-user experience is the same. If you set up and run Google Browser Sync you can even have all your bookmarks, passwords and the like follow you from browser to browser.

Safari does seem to render some pages a bit faster than Firefox. Also, if you have alot of extensions to Firefox the entire experience can be a bit slower - but nothing I would trade for the above reasons.

If you want Firefox to look a bit more Apple-like check these themes out:

Nah, I bought it at the new apple store in Southampton with the education discount. Well pleased with it at the moment, looks gorgeous and sleek!

I guess I'll be spending the day installing stuff and trying it out :)
