Is there a comprehensive list anywhere? I just want a single, plain list of insurance grades for UK cars. It seems impossible to find.

I was quite amazed to see that my rover 220 GTI is in group 17!

This is a naughty website as I see that an Impreza estate 2.0 sport is only one insurance group higher than my 1.5 '92 civic. Hmmmm, with another baby on the way, I need a bigger car!

    Mwuhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

The Impreza 2.0 Sport is dog slow though, most versions are only 115bhp, which with the transmission losses of 4WD makes for pretty poor performance :/ which as far as I can see is the only reason to buy an Impreza...

I just love the look and I can sell it to the missus on the fact that a 4x4 is a safer environment for the kids! The turbo is really fun but far too expensive to run / insure.

I have seen a 2.0 sport estate do a 15 ft leap off a humpback bridge once and it was sweet to see and I have wanted one ever since!

Finding a cheapish Scooby Estate is quite hard though :/ Ive found a Megane 1.6 Coupe that's only 1 insurance group higher than my Clio 1.2 :D Need to shift some cash around now.

how the hell is a 4x4 a safer environment for the kids? it might go quicker, but you can't stop any quicker, can you?

Dont know. It's safer in the respect you have more grip in the wet I suppose but only if it has traction control. As long as it has ABS and chunky brakes (and that 5 star crash test rating) that's about as safe as you can get.

Don't forget that different insurance companies may put your car into a different class, for example my Pug 406 is either 10, 11, or 12 depending on who I contact for a quote :)

Plus there is more than the insurance group to base your quote on. My car is group 13 but the price I get quoted is closer to what most group 9 cars would cost me.

it used to be true that insurance companies based cover on groups but now i think it's more the statistical rating of which cars are more likely to be involved in accidents, rather than engine size etc.

for instance my 1.8 scirocco cost less to insure than a diesel cavalier, despite being a lot quicker, because it's considered a collectors car...
