So in the last 4 weeks ive had 3 parcels from online retailers, and 5 outgoing mail items go missing. Im beginning to get a little bit annoyed.

I send everything recorded due to issues in the past, but even they're going missing on a regular basis. Now normally i wouldnt care about the outgoing stuff but i recently sent pics of my daughter to relatives in scotland, Recorded of course. Guess what they never got there.

Its getting to a stage where etailers ive used for years are starting to thing im lying to them, because of the rate things are going 'missing'. Ive filed complaints but nothing ever seems to happen and i get told to file a claim. They dont seem to understand that pics of my daughter have no value but could easily find there way into the wrong hands!

So ive come to the conclusion that some ****er is thieving anything that looks like it might be worth something, What im unsure of is where i stand with my plan to find out where its going.

Basically the idea is to send some form of gps tracker to myself, It will eventually not turn up at least i can see where it is, where do i stand when it does go missing and i can prove that my mail was stolen?

The management at my depot are complete morons, do i take it higher?

Bar this experiment i have completely ceased to use RM, The only thing they really offer over couriers is the convenience anyway.

If you're sending stuff recorded or registered post, you should be able to see what's happened to it on the RM website. The point of the barcoding is so that RM should be able to track your deliveries at every stage.

Not if someone simply picks the parcel of the conveyer belt and runs of with it.

If I was you, I would mail the GPS tracker in a parcel for something valuable. Like a laptop or something along that. No thief can stand for a new easy computer ;)

In theory yes, but all the ones that have gone missing just report "the parcel was accept at PO" or something along those lines, that never changes so its recorded when i hand it over at the PO but from there nothing. Now i dont always use the same PO so ive rulled that stage out.

My guess is its going missing after the PO but before it gets put out for delivery.

I completely feel your pain. Almost every single delivery I've had from abroad in the last few years has failed to get to me (if it was RM, courier stuff is fine). I feel really bad when I have to inform people that their stuff hasn't got to me, especially when it's from a small one person company and they end up out of pocket sending me multiples or giving me a refund. We do have different post-people almost daily and we used to have a really nice and reliable post-lady so I think it's more likely to be at one of the depots for me rather than the local postie. RM won't let me complain about some of them because I can't give them the dates things went missing. I have the date they were sent, not entirely sure how I'm meant to know when they went missing :sigh:

So yeah, I know what you're going through and it really sucks.

would kidnapping the posty at your door and holding him to ransom for your post be illegal? lol!

GPS the parcel, with something heavy in it and fragile stickers all over it. send it at the counter in the PO and start tracking, even if it means staking out the joint! lol!

This happens often with review code, where it gets lost in transit. Best thing to do is switch from RM, who are awful, to a courier. Failing that, can you arrange for it to go to your local post office for pick-up? Then they have no bloody excuse.

I've worked for Royal Mail over the festive season and I can honestly tell you that it's very very difficult for a parcel to be stolen within the sorting office. Most of the time parcels etc are stolen by the delivery workers or from your residence by an opportunist thief. One time I had a graphics card sent to me from ebay using special delivery. I never got the item and when I visited the royal mail website to see where it was I found it was 'delivered' and signed for. When I viewed the signature it was just a simple X. No name or anything. I immediately contacted Royal Mail to be told basically it was delivered and signed for, we've done everything expected so please go away.

I managed to get Royal Mail to interview the delivery driver once I got the police involved and he said it was delivered to a person outside my door, who they assumed to be the resident!

Now if I ever order anything online I make sure it's delivered using a decent courier if possible, or get it sent to my friends place instead.

I sent some gig tickets to a relative via Royal Mail Special Delivery (next day) once about 10 days before the gig itself.
5 Days later I get a phone call saying the tickets still haven't arrived. I stick the tracking code in and nothing comes up.

I phoned the post office I sent them from and they took my reference number and said that that packet didn't exist and I must have posted it elsewhere. It took me going down to them with the reciept with their name and address on it for them to look. Turns out one of the workers had stuck it in a drawer and forgotten about it... =/

The sooner the government allow competing delivery companies to run a mail system, the better. I will switch away from RM the second someone else comes into the market.

With how much Royal Fail costs, it's cheaper to go with a cheap courier like Parcel2Go, even with the extra of insurance, it's still cheaper than special delivery..

Yes, but if it says that the parcel was accepted at the Post Office, then that means that RM have accepted responsibility for the item in question and they are legally accountable for it until it's been delivered.

If it's happening on such a regular basis, it might be worth nipping down to the local police station and getting them involved - even if it only forces RM to conduct their own enquiry like flibblesan said.

Thanks for the replies, Ive just been and sorted out my mail collection, its a pain having to go to the office to get it but at least i should get it.

All i ever get told when something i sent goes missing is to fill in a claim form, Im going to go with the GPS idea which at some stage will go missing im fairly sure, and when it does ill be taking a little trip to the police station. At least then i can hopefully prove somethings not right.

Its annoying because if any other company acted like them they wouldnt exist!

Could be different elsewhere, but mates who worked at my local ones said the opposite :/ For me it did point to one of the offices because we had a regular post-lady and then started getting a different postie every day and stuff was still going missing.

Worst one for me were the Mighty Boosh tickets I ordered a couple of years back. I ordered 4 for a group of us. They never showed, RM have a signature which is my surname, but not my signature so they won't pay up and the promoter won't pay up because they have proof of sending. None of my mates gave me the cash for their tickets so instead of us each being £30 down, I was £120 down while unemployed. Not very impressed with that still :grr:

Also, as for switching away from RM. When you order things online you generally aren't given a choice. If there is a choice then I obviously choose the non-RM option.
