Exactly how do you have the expertise needed to make such a judgement?

I don't think it hurts the software companies as much as they say it does, which is "billions of dollars lost...those evil pirates must be arrested!!" right...all 500 million of them around the world..
Thing is, if there was nowhere for me to get free or cheap pirated software/music that would normally cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, then I wouldn't buy them! For example, who (except companies and professionals) would spend hundreds of dollars on Photoshop, Lightwave, VisualStudio, ...you know what I mean.
    Example:
    Newtek LightWave 3D [8] Mac/Win -- NEW LOW PRICE!!
    Commercial SRP: $ 1595.00
    Your Price: $ 250.00
    (you save $1345)
That's great, but I still would never buy that.
The point is that if they managed to get rid of all pirating, they wouldn't get more money anyway.

This was for music/films etc, not high level software. If you couldn't pirate would you buy music? I think you probably would.

Regardless, even if you wouldn't, that still does not add any legitimacy to your piracy, or any illegitimacy to these actions.

Well I tend to watch movies at the cinema and buy them if they are truly exceptional. If the reviews are dire such as AvP I will most likely download it out of curiosity to see how bad it is, I'm certainly not wasting my money on crap films especially as it might persaude them to make a sequel.

So if they were better than the reviews implied would you go and watch them at a cinema?

Likewise, AvP being a good example.

The thing about pirating, particularly movies and music is that unless you plan to sell them and make some kind of living off them then most people cba. I'll admit I was dl'ing about 3 films a day (as well as other bits and bobs), over the summer just gone. I'd just finished uni, I hadn't got a job so it gave me something to do. Now I've got a job I haven't dl'd anything for... I dunno, a couple of months. I haven't even watched half of the 100 odd movies I dl'd. Now that time is the limiting factor in my life I don't care to dl/watch mediocre movies - I buy the dvds and cds I want and go see the films I want.

I think you'll find that most of the people that frequent this site will go through a very similar pattern. After all, piracy is just like any other form of teenage rebellion - like underage drinkin/smoking. It's the people that are making money out of it that are the problem.

Think that just about sums it all up. :thumb:

I can't believe it ! Have you ever read the essays about music piracy ?! The artist being illegaly downloaded most are the ones who sell by far the most. Their music is spread widely and more people listen to their music 'cause some nerds on those "I'm-14-and-I'm-cool-'cause-I-leech"-boards tellin' them to listen to some artist ("He's hot dude !") and these damn kids do what they are told ! The more people know your music, the more people actually buy it... That's the way the market works.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but the blame for my illegal downloading activities can be placed squarely on the media itself! I am constantly exposed to celebrities and role models downloading on television and in movies. Sure, a lot of them just torrent a single here, a clip there, just to make their performance more convincing for us, the viewing public. And on the surface, sure, this may seem harmless. But when I see Angelina Jolie on the big screen, downloading the latest John Tesh album while swigging Everclear, smoking a joint, and having unprotected sex with heroin addicts, then OBVIOUSLY this imagry is going to put the desire into my head to download pirated materials. I think maybe if I pirated some Teshy, she'd be into me! So it's not MY fault that I steal media from the media! IT'S THE MEDIA'S FAULT!

If I were you, I'd use a condom when you're having sex with a heroin addict.

I think that this might not be his aim... But who knows ?
Not a big surprise to me. Have you ever wondered why there are more BT sites than eDonkey sites ? And why police focusses on BT sites at the moment ? Because the BT community is that small ? Don't think so, actually...

I don't have any pirated games, songs, videos, applications, gold, gems, plunder whatever you want to throw up...

So where did that point that you were trying to make go?
