For some strange reason my old servers inbuilt ATi Fire XL IGP solution which won't run at a bit-depth of more then 8.

    ANyone got an idea why?

Running Fedora Core 5 (cos its challlenging)

ATI drivers are allways a bit flacky... I can't help you on that one (nVidia & Intel Extreme Graphics here)...

But... Your Old server should only need 8 bit, since it of course uses CLI... ;) Running X on a server is a nono ;) J/K... or not?;)

And fedora because it's challenging? ;)

It was an old server (P4/1GBRAM/80GB HDD) used for accounting stuff, but it no longer is and I want to use it to test some code I'm working on for windows/linux compatibility.

And no-one that I asked recommended fedora, so I choose it :p

Oh, you're one of that kind of persons... Well, I warn you, stay clear of Gentoo, it's awfull... A true hellspawn... I don't know any reason why one would use it... Sucks donkey balls to be honest ;)

Yea, I heard that everyone uses it so it can't be too great at teaching

Gentoo is considered one of the more difficult distributions around... It's great at teaching what Linux is about (it actually IS exactly what Linux is about, choise...). Sporting no installer, you need to compile everthing up from scratch, bootstrap your 'install' ontop of the 'setup' cd... Configure and compile your kernel from scratch... Rest asured young padawan, Gentoo is a great distribution to learn Linux, but be prepared for a steep learning curve, because, certainly in the beginning, it is quite intolerant with screwups...

The reason seasoned Linux zealots use Gentoo is probably because of it's minimalistic, core power. Because you get what you ask, nothing more, nothing less... And, also the way you ask it.

Ubuntu is the stuff most newbies use, for its high windows factor (Don't want to start a flame wars, you pick the distro you like, regardless of expirience, but ubuntu is a great starter distro)

EDIT: But that ends my promotional tour on Gentoo... The choise is up to you... But if you keep fedora, ditch the X ;) :D J/K

Why? I said it wasn't easy, but I didn't say it was impossible... Gentoo offers a supurb manual, which guides you to the install process, but only guides (by giving commands, options, choices, and the consequences thereof) So it might be complex, it won't be easy, but it will learn you a lot;)

i am using gentoo since 1 years now

about learning its 100% true, it is a great distro. It is very fast too, because you buitl the OS for your system only and not for the maximum of system like precompiled distro. Portage (package manager) is the best of the whole world of linux (i tried amost all main distro and trush me, it is true). The only problem of gentoo is the slow instalation and problems whenyou install new hardware (you need to do it manually) and when you initial use/make.conf is really bad and some feature that you wnat to use are missing

Portage is great, but apt is better, more mature and more stable... Maybe you don't notice this, but portage has some flaws... But the developers are getting there;)

APT too. Many software get deps problem and you know that only when it fail, no warning (there is warning but it still fail a lot of time for me).
There are many problem with conection on many computer
The database is incomplete and some apps are missing
The system is not optimised, it install binary when some software can lose up to 60% of speed with missing hardware/arch optimisation

Of cource software are not always working perfectly, but most of time it is user mistake

I know some of you will quote this and say its false, but i had all these problem and i dont have them with portage.

That is an unlucky mistake then, I use apt and portage a lot (portage at home, apt on 5 servers), and believe me, apt is actually more secure in the updates... I didn't say a thing about the speed, because that's inherent to binaries not to be 100% optimised...
