on all my pcs firefox tends to eat upto 128mb of ram with only about 15tabs open and it can also slow my pc to a crawl and use about 90% cpu randomly. Anyone think that it's become too bloated?
oh, no, your 4ghxz machine with 2gbs of ram has a process running using 120MB of memory with _only_ 15 tabs showing? 1 - it's open source - it's not going to be massively optimised 2 - 15 tabs? that#s not a trivial amount. plugins, flash, images, they all add up. 3 - really, honestly who gives a toss.
Can I smack you? OSS is more optimised then CSS in my experience... OSS dev's are about the only developers that actually optimise code This is true however...
I'm with Fod on this one. Just for fun, next time that's happening open the same series of tabs in IE (get the history trails the same if possible) and see if it does much better. If so, switch quietly back to IE - to the best of my knowledge it's no longer a horrible security risk since version 7 came out. Personally, I use Firefox because I like it, not because it's faster. If you don't want to use the features of Firefox (extensions, mostly) then don't use Firefox.
What version are you using? im still on 1.5 But ive heard the 2.0 has become far to bloated due to lack of things to fix
Actually, I had to. I use a D-Link router which has a linux OS. Unfortunately, the f***tards at D-Link wrote the OS in such a manner that I can only properly secure the wifi in IE6 run under WINE
Im running version 2.0.0.2 and no web browser should use as much ram as firefox does, I used to be able to browse the web with 4mb of ram total.
Have a look at about:config There should be an option to adjust the memory usage. Whats the FF foundation forum sudjest? It was for me writing it.
You are correct, if you just browse text only pages... Now, if you open lots of big photo sites etc, higher memory usage is inevitable...
slightly different then day to day usage, i believe a read somewhere that theres a firefox extension to "fool" things into thinking its ie
Really? May I ask what your experience of auditing OSS and CSS is? I'm a CSS dev and take optimisation seriously so I hope that your experience has either been bad and/or limited. (if that sounds rude then sry, it isn't meant to be)
I only know of IETab but it only works under windows since it just opens an instance of IE in a FF tab
I'm closely involved in some OSS projects, and if the CSS developers would take optimalisation as serious as we have to (the maintainer is quite strict about it) a lot of programs would run a lot smoother. Also, at my high school there are some MSDNAA (IIRC) developers that teach me, and they have nowhere near as optimised code as the OSS projects I'm involved in.
nah student code is never optimised - it's designed to be easy for the student to follow and understand. (don't get me started on MSDNAA) commercial code? you spend aaaall your bloody time in profilers.
