Lately, firefox has been opening popups of websites I visit. For an example, If I visit wired.com, it opens a freakin popup.

Any ideas on how to stop this? btw popup blocker is enabled :cooldude:

I just disabled Javascript and added a no javascript extension and NO MORE POPUPS AT ALL. It even removes some of the annoying adds

Wow, drudgereport.com just got a popup to display in Opera 8/Ubuntu Linux.

First unwanted popup I've EVER seen get thru Opera, in 5+ years of using it in 98, XP & now Linux.

Anyone know what damnable trick Drudge uses to do that?

EDIT: No popup when I visited drudge a second time. Didn't change browser settings at all. Curiouser and curiouser...

You could just get adblock and block anything from these sites etc. Not sure if that will actually stop the popups appearing.

And check for spyware as well!

:D You might want to re-read my post... It was a bit of a thread-hijack, but I don't run FF or Windows, so I don't have to worry about installing FF extensions or spyware scanning. I was just surprised because I've never seen a popup get past Opera's built-in popup blocker - but Drudge managed it, once.

But in general, for Windows systems, adblock + spyware scan is good advice...

I was actually referring to the original post, I just realised however that I missed the post before your post, where the problem has been solved!. Got a bit mixed up there!

Do you get the feeling these websites are on commision with companies that produce add blocker.

It's a big joke really, that we end up buying firewalls, anti-virus, add blockers, etc.

Probably find all of these problems and generated by big software corps in the end :waah:

EDIT: Can anyone remeber the last time someone was actually convicted for creating a virus, I cetainly haven't seen anything in the news

blaster worm creator got busted iirc (might not've been blaster, was one of the huge ones that went round last year anyway)
and i dont pay for firewall, AV or adblockers...
firewall - dont use one, but there are free firewalls around
    AV - avg
    ad/popup blockers - FireFox...

Disabling JavaScript will definitely stop popups, but it'll also stop pretty much every website from working properly... especially those that are embracing Ajax.
