Firefox puts the program and empty template files in a \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox directory and all your bookmarks, history, most extensions, any customizations, in a different place, under 'Docs & Settings\You\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox' in XP, as your profile. So un-installing from Control Panel should leave all your own stuff untouched.

I upgraded from 1.01 to 1.02 last night, it played silly beggars for a bit but after a reboot seems to have settled down.

You could try copying bookmarks.html and any customized user*.js or .css files from your profile to a safe place, uninstalling Firefox, deleting your profile directory and starting with a clean sheet. Then you can copy them back to your new profile.

A firewall will recognise it's a new program so you'll have to give it the OK.

Try Opera, its really nice! You can chat on IRC channels, read your email, and loads of other stuff ALL ingrated into the browser. Its very nice. Nicer than Firefox to me.

    Third time tonight :eyebrow:

This isn't a "bash Firefox" thread, it's a "can anyone help me with my problem" thread....

As for help, what cpemma said should work. Heard of this happening before.
