Maybe they should just give up and start using the same naming style as car manufacturers.

    Ford Focus -entry level
    Ford Fusion -mainstream sedan
Ford Mustang -high end sports car

then just differentiate them by year.

    2010 GeForce Expresso
    2010 Geforce Commando
    2010 Geforce Armada

Ok I'm just pulling names out of my ass, but tell me that wouldn't be easier to remember than endless numbers and rebrandings.

    Negoumbercules:
That would work, but for the complexity of rebranding, and how many products are offered. The way you put it is simple, but thinking about it, you'd end up with stuff like

    Geforce Midstream Basic (9600GSO)
    Geforce Midstream Plus (9600GT)
    Geforce Excel Value (8800GS)
    Geforce Excel (8800GTS of old)
    Geforce Excel Pro (8800GT)
    Geforce Excel Pro II (9800GT)
    Geforce Excel Turbo (8800GTS new)
    Geforce Maximum (8800GTX)
    Geforce Maximum Extreme (8800 Ultra)
    Geforce Maximum Pro (9800GTX)
    Geforce Maximum Pro Plus (9800GTX+)
    Geforce Maximum Advance (GTS250)

And that isn't exactly any better. And all these are 8800s, let alone the proper GTX200s, the basic GT200s, the 8600s and below, 9500s and below and all the mobile chips. Numbers get confusing, names get ridiculous.

If you were around circa 2004, the X850XT PE was pretty much the world's most sought after card, and sure enough there was hardly any stock(BT has an article, the faliure one I think about this). Leading to everyone calling it the phantom or press edition.

In other words, aside from having a ludicrous name(well still okay compared to the X1950XTX Crossfire) it was highly sought after and was basically an illusion. Kinda like the GTX480 when it'll come out probably.

Wait, you are called Negoumbercules, and you criticise reVidia for their naming schemes?

Anyway, i guess having the uneven ones be the meh OEM parts like it is now with the 300 series lives up to reVidia legacy. Why they picked 470 as opposed to 460 is completely beyond me though.

Frankly, i'm a bit disappointed. I fully expected the next generation to be called something completely irrelevant again, on account of their cool new cuda cores. Oh well, start up the rebranding mill! :dremel:

Oh and rep for Obiwan! :D

It looks like one of the Raven Cases (the one that got such a glowing review on Bit.... :p)

Personally before I start 'lol nvidia fail etc', I will at least wait until the cards are released and available. For the moment I will enjoy my new HD5870 voltage tweak (got it for £280.... :D).

By the time they really end up releasing them, they'll be named 570 and 580...

I don't care what they name it. It could be GFX card 123 for all I care just release the product already. Nvidia is so far behind ATi right now they probably saw what ATi was doing and started over.

    ^^this.

    What's in a name?

I reckon they're going with 4xx as the mobile chips are 3xx. Simple.

It's either good, or it's not. If it's not, I won't buy one... if it is, I will - even if it's called Susan.

Time never stands still. Plus, wasn't it ATi who had the upper hand during it's X1900 days?

Without breaking any NDAs is it possible to tell us when you guys (BT/CPC) will be able to tell us ANYTHING about these cards including but not limited to:

    a) performance
    b) benchmarks
    c) if you guys have anything in the test labs right now
    d) when you guys may receive something to test
    e) are they ATi beaters
    f) specs
    g) if you have seen examples of what they can achieve did it bring tears to your eyes?
    h) were they good tears or bad?
    i) expensive?

Well Nvidia's quite mum about it, they haven't even allowed anyone to see one IRL much less bench mark it, the only thing we can base it's performance off of is the white paper specs and the white paper performance benchies they did themselves which, I'm somewhat inclined to believe as they did fairly represent the opposition.

Well, I was referring to early DX10 days but I think you're right there as well.

I think that's what people sometimes call "competition", you know, all that "now we're #1, now you're #1 and we have to play catch-up" stuff. Maybe I'm wrong though. :eyebrow:

This is all hearsay and guesswork at the moment (and I obviously don't work for bit tech(, but
    a) Probably going to be GTX480 is to HD5870 what the GTX280 was to the HD4870.
    b) None yet (probably deliberate, since there have been so many problems so far)
    c) I doubt it, nvidia haven't made anywhere near enough cards
    d) I'd guess Sometime next month, probably later rather than sooner
    e) Yes and No. The HD5970 is almost certainly going to be vastly better than the GTX480, and the 480 is likely to be very expensive compared to the 5870, possibly prohibitively expensive.
    f) Still up in the air, the clock speeds have been reduced since the first verson
    g) I don't think there are going to be many huge surprises or disappointments, other than perhaps in the price tag.
    h) N/A
    i) Likely to be bad tears :p
