Well I've just set up Fedora on my main rig and its a dream to setup, no problem at all setting up a internet connection through my other box which is running xp, and I also got the multiple monitors to work after about 5 minutes of playing around. It looks like Im going to be ditching XP once and for all on my main rig. Next thing is dvd playback and mp3. Anybody got any suggestions?
thanks guys I will be looking at them, just need to figure out how to install them now. (I'm a complete beginer with linux) Im loving it so far though, its good to be learning something new again.
cerberus I'm sure XMMS is in Fedora's CDs. I cannot give you a step by step of how to install it from Fedora's CD since I have SuSE. What you have to do is go to Add/Remove Programs, then Search, type XMMS, when it appears, tick it and Accept, and you'll have XMMS installed. As for MPlayer, try to find the RPM for your distro and version. You'll also need to get the RPMs of the codecs.
I have found out that fedora does not come with mp3 capabilities. you have to upgrade xmms to do this, Im in the process of doing this at the moment. I've found a few useful guides on the net which are helping me with this. Getting use to using rpms and the ike is the strangests thing at the momentim so use to windows and justinstalling everything from one package.
Well, Linux is a mix of Windows and DOS, when talking about installing programs. Some you can double click and install (RPM) and some have to be compiled and/or its installation has to be run from command line.
To watch DVDs in Linux you'll want to install libdvdcss which doesn't usually ship with the Distro due to licensing\legality issues. RPMs/DEBs should be available at your favorite repository.
