Just thought i would post this becuase im inpressed i got given a broken 8800 ultra it wouldn't display properly and was getting artifacts so i striped her down put it in the oven for 10 mins then put her back together & wow it worked ran 3dmark n stuff no problems temps ok and everything One thing im a little concered about is when i striped her down it had like material like putty stuff on the heatsinks n stuff & i just replaced it with thermal past you lot think this will be ok ? the temps seem fine tho
I was looking round the net about the problem and a few people have said about it working it melts the solder back or somthing lol i know it sounds strange
lol exactly! that's so random it's genius! i tend to lean towards using the microwave whenever possible
It actually works for all problematic video cards. It's important you do not overdo it though or you will screw it up. General rule is to put it in with some frozen iceland oven chips and when they turn nice and brown ready to eat your GPU will work again. Never use the microwave. Unless it's a driver issue.
Ye the video i watched said preheat the over to 200 degrees put it in and leave for 10 mins then take it out and let it cool down he did it on a 260gtx
Im having problems with my HD4870 again. Wonder if the thermal past isn't properly applied. Dont want to dismantle it cause its still within warranty. wonder if putting it in the oven tho would invalidate it lol.
I think they would know somehow...a melted cooler case? Yeah, honest I didn't put it into the oven!! Hmmm, I have two borked 4870's...I may try this later
Interesting.... I wonder if it's the chip package solder ball that reflow or whether it's the solder bumps on the die itself (the latter was widely reported as to route cause of nvidia's reliability problems last year)
just found this lol video 1 and 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gb1ujGfp0M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVWDru1bub8&feature=related
I've taken apart the 8800gtx and installed aftermarket sink (hr-03) back in 2007- you need to get a new set of thermal pads for the memory if you trashed the old ones.. gotta be careful here, the tim won't last cause the gap is just too big between the cooler and memory- you have the vrm's which also were cooled by pads artic alumina might work but you'll never be able to take off the cooler after that.. here's a old thread on xtreme might give you some ideas on were to purchase new pads http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-160994.html remember even the top chip on the g80 was padded.. replace them all
Luckily my coffee was finished otherwise I would've spewed it all across my keyboard, monitor, mouse and mobile phone and then I would have needed to put them all in the oven to dry.
If it stops working/starts overheating, I'd recommend some. I don't know exactly what thermal pads you'll need, but the ones used for mounting my waterblock onto my 8800GTX are 1mm thick in the VRM area.
