Build Advice FIXED: Help! PC won't start

FIXED!

i am so effing fuming at the moment, i've spent a lot of money and this pc just won't start its really got me pee'd off.

i've built a new build (components in sig) i assembled it outside of the case and worked. now i've put it inside the case it doesn't want to work.

i know building computers has its problems but seriously, if you fork out so much money can't you at least expect it to run straight away. whats the point? i seriously am considering refunding all these parts and buying a 32" and an xbox...

Ive taken it out the case and it's decided to work again. Whats happening? I can't see anything that this could be shorting on.

The case is a corsair 650d? Anyone else had this problem?

 

Maybe you didn't insert the 24pin motherboard pin well.
Also, it could be you forgot (happened to me), the 6/8-pin connector for the motherboard (be sure to not get confused with the graphic card PCI-E power plug.. the pin layout is different)

I have all the right cables in, I think it's the case that's shorting the circuit. Done it like 20 times now. Trying it outide the case it works but as soon as I try screw it in it doesn't work. Can't think of what to do.

Is it safe to place cardboard under my motherboard permanently? This case is crap. I had higher hopes for corsair!

 

No it's not safe, the bottom of the motherboard does get warm when your system is under load.

Have a careful look under your motherboard. Does it look like the screw holes show any sign of damage?
I don't have your case, but doses the tips to screw the motherboard in, are they removable? Did you put them? Maybe one of them hides under a place where their is no screw hole on your motherboard, and shorts the board.

 

Did you use the motherboard spacers when you installed the mobo? If not then use them, they should have been bundled with all the other case screws.

 

The motherboard standoff + screws are actually meant to ground it via the case, so it's possible that it's not being grounded properly. This happened to me years ago but I forget how I fixed it...

Alternatively it could be physical - outside the case there is nothing to support gfx cards etc so they may be sitting better in the slot than when mounted in the case. I had a crappy old PC case that wouldn't let my gfx card sit in the slot all the way! Had to bend the PCI brackets to get it to seat in fully!

 

yep, i often use felt washers just to be sure u could try that.

 

hey guys, yep i used the standoffs. this is whats annoying me, in both of my cases this motherboard is not working. it works outside of the box and its doing my nut in lol. I've requested that they pick up my parts and assemble it themselves as its definitely the motherboard that seems to be the issue with shorting the system. may the things under the mobo are too long. but its sooooo confusing :S


any other ideas?

Just to be sure, didn't you overtighten the screws ? Also, are you sure you didn't put standoffs in a place where motherboard has no holes for screws => you are shorting out the board even with standoffs ?

Just something that might be worth testing, if the CPU cooler is on tight enough. Just add some pressure with your fingers on the top of the cooler when turning on. When outside the case the mobo is probably on it's back, where as inside the case it will be standing up, so the H70 cooler might be slightly leaning off the CPU when inside the case.

Probably not it, but worth a test. I think the post above has good advice though.

 

nice! thanks for the replies! you all posted things i never thought could have had an effect on the mb.

i got it to run today. however, i don't know if it's by luck or by what i did earlier :S.

basically i removed one of the rubber grommets that sits under the motherboard because i thought it was pointless being there. now for some reason my pc seems to work now. can that really have been what was shorting my system? i hope it is because otherwise i still will come across this problem in the near future.
