lol... imagine you click on play in whatever media player your using, then a message pops up that reads:
"please wait until one of our hitmans has time to check your proof of purchase and enters the code so you can listen to your legally purchased music, failure to comply with this notice will result in immediate assasination (immediate as in after taking you to court and squeezing millions out of you). Thank you for using this great service provided by Hired Goons Ltd on behalf of the Riaa, please send any thank you letters (feel free to include any spare cash, candy and your soul) directly to Riaa World Domination Inc. located at 666 Hell."

...and I would like all women I find attractive to sleep with me.

The point is, we all can't get what we want.

I don't know why they make such a fuss, we used to hand out cassettes like there was no tomorrow. They are dinosaurs, still clinging onto old patterns, when we are all waving at them from 10000yrs in the future.

I'm all for the RIAA having extra code running on my machine.... but only if I can charge them for CPU time. :)

BTW, I just decided my rate for CPU time is $10,000 per cycle.... oh, and I have a vendor agreement policy on my machine. If you want your code to run on it you have to agree to my terms just like I have to agree to yours.

The RIAA is thinking to small. I envision inter-cranial implants at birth to censor / filter all sound and sight. Really what is next?

Not a huge change there then :duh:

If all that people told us about our privacy (or lack of) as true, the world would not be like it is.

On the other hand, the thought of the RIAA doing this is both scary and a bit funny - if they are stupid enough to do this, it will be the kick start that Linux needs to really get in to the mass market.

You know, there's an easy way to destroy the effectiveness of this thing:

    Distributed Denial of Service.

There's no way that they'll put a list of every single song on your system, so there must be some form of central database. Also, the software will report "infractions" back to the mothership RIAA, so that's another point of weakness. Just blast the infraction system with millions of junk "infractions" until it goes catatonic.

Wouldn't this actually be legal as they are expecting your computer to send them messages? Maybe this could be included in Folding At Home or SETI At Home to ramp things up.

sorry... anyone asking such a question.... should be.... nevermind....

Might be me.. but what happend to free will n so on? what'll be next? we'll all get these ankle-braceletts @ birth?

Besides: There are many many many freeware A/V's out there...doubt they could "persuade" all of em to fold in

and Geezus F'ing christ when will this pointless, timewasting debate end? Even if DL'ing would be punishable by Gas/Letha linjection or Old Sparky.... it will NEVER STOP... what are they gonna filter anyway? the filename? yeah right... as if noone has downloaded a porn instead of the newest flic off of KazzaaLimewirebearsharebittorrentemuleandgodknowswhateverelse!
    DOH!
and again! there are these 1337 G33KS out there that will just go and change/modify some opensource whatever .. and.. voila.. 'ere we go again.. dunno why i am writing this .. coz.. as i mentioned above.. pointless

What although DOES!!!! concern me is... what IF i am a honest law obeying person? As far as i understand their "wishes".. they want to force the owner of PC to have a trojan installed... (silent cry for a new I-Love-You from my side here)
As you sow, so you shall reap.

not to mention the securityholes a M$ O/S will ADDITIONALLY have....geez....why not also stream all Data about opend images to the Old Folks Home Association.. you could be infringing on Mrs. Grandma "intellectual copyright" (if that is what its called) of her KNITTING PATTERNS! FFS!

I wonder..... do people actually BECOME that stupid.. or is it somekind of congenital defect?

yay for open source and Linux! Why doesn't the RIAA just roll over and die already? Besides if someone can get a movie of their president (the RIAA pres.) while he is singing happy birthday, we could open a lawsuit against him for copyright. Then Sue his ass to kingdom come and everyone else in the firm.

BRILLIANT. Now just make sure your terms explicitly ban using code run on your machine for the purposes the RIAA wants to run it for (namely crippling your hardware) so that the instant they sign it and try to run their malware on your machine you can sue THEM for breach of terms! You've beat them at their own game, and what's even MORE miraculous, you've beat them at their own game WITHOUT STOOPING EVEN HALF AS LOW AS THEM! i LOVE it!

Techno, that DDOS attack idea is genius!!

Why doesn't someone write a little opensource app called p2tp.exe (Power to the People) that anyone can run to donate their extra bandwidth to blasting idiots off the internet.

Obviously this would create a lot of power to the person with control of exactly where to target attacks.
So maybe some sort of communal voting system could be devised?
Or create several options for targets and you can just tick in the software which companies you dislike and add to the might of the rest of the world.

Really would be an excellent example of democracy in action! :)

this is like installing CCTV's to cover every inch of your home. even if the chinese government tried to do that, riot would brake out.

so would one expect RIAA to succeed? no chance.

or "You are the weakest link, goodbye!" :D

The beauty is, the only ones likely to vote are the types of people that would linger on the likes of this forum etc. :)
