What should I do? I've just built my new PC and didn't realise I had to do it prior to installing windows. I've done all the driver and windows updates and stuff too
If I remember right I used this to change mine. http://forums.pcworld.com/index.php?/topic/124878-changing-to-ahci-without-reinstalling-windows/
It's not a big deal. Something has to change those registry values. The registry can be backed up as far as I'm aware.
Yeah that guide looks straight forward. Should I create a restore point before doing so? Also what about ahci drivers will they automatically install once I've done it correctly and windows reboots?
I did this exact thing this morning actually. Worked fine. I still don't quite understand why Windows needs to be told of AHCI otherwise it crashes...
Yup, they updated without any problems. I was disconnected from the Internet too, but it still worked just fine.
its not just boot times - AHCI enables NCQ on HDD`s anyway http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976 ^^ as said above , MS released a 1 button enable for it.
Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV In the pane on the right side, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor. Does that mean I only have to change the value for JUST Msachi and not the other?
Ah Ok I didn't even realise that fix it thing did it for you! As long as I know I have to change both sub directories then I would have done it manually but not much point I might as well let fix it for me! What are the benefits of ahci mode? Speedier and a longer lasting drive?
