Ok....so my cousin forgot her new password on her vista home premium.... what a dick.

anyways, i gotta try and sort out her pc. we tried using a password reset disk but that didn't work. any suggestions or is it a case of rebooting the whole thing?

Those are moments where 2 partitions is the best solution. I was told countless time that it was useless... well here is another instance of many that it is not. If you had Windows in a partition (such a C:\ for example) and all your files and programs on D:\, then a simple 20 min re-install of Vista could have been performed without loosing any data (just don't' forget to set the Document, Music. Video etc... folder to folder into the D drive).

I am afraid all I know, would be a re-install. If you have a second computer, attach the HDD on there and backup all his files, put back the HDD to his computer and re-install.

I am sure there is a way to reset the password. Give me a few minutes to find it though. I think you have to boot of a Linux live CD but we'll see...

    edit: here we go

    Have fun with that!

Huh... well here goes all the security with the password.
Oh wait you need to floppy... so you can put a password on the BIOS.

Most BIOSes don't need a floppy to put a password in, there should just be an option somewhere.
And we all knew that a Windows password provides next to now security for your data - you can always just boot off a Linux live CD

data protection?! I know that... you can remove the HDD and plug-in onto a another computer as well. But it is about preventing access to your computer. I guess the abov emention solution does not work if you have Vista Ultimate with BitLocker thingy.

I would love to know what method he did use. This morning a friend came to me saying he had locked himself out of his computer. Rather amusing really :)
